Your original gear had 20 teeth. Junk Yard is the easiest source and you also need the retaining clip.

Thanks for the welcome and Thank you all for your help but no luck so far. All the junk yards around my neck of the woods dont carry anything old than 97. I called a Ford service center and thier books only go back to 80. I think I maybe at a loss. I don't want to put something in that is going to give the wrong speed or that might mess my truck up. I think I'll have to follow the chart that airharley gave me the link to. If anyone has anyother suggestions please let me know.

Thanks

Mater, Don't give up so easily, the big yards may not go back past 97 but there are yards out there that have older parts in them.

I used to pick up speedo gears just laying on the ground when yarding. If you buy something else the yard owner might let you have a half dozen of them for $.50.

You need to note that not only do they have a tooth count but left and right hand twist. If memory serves the autos have a right hand twist while the manual have a left hand twist.

keep on hunting they are out there

The 64 three speed transmission uses a totally diffrerent gear than the 65 up transmissions, three speeds autos or four speeds.

LMC carries new gears along with Dennis carpenter. Green Sales May have some but you will neeed the correct part numbers to search.

Also verify the rear end ratio as over 42 years the center section may have been changed. Dont help to buy a gear that does not match the ratio.

Well first place to look is the warranty tag it will say a letter or number under the axle. this numeral or letter can be coded by looking in the shop manual for the corresponding ratio. Avalible ratios in 64 were 3.70 or 4.10 for 9" rears 3.89 and 4.10 were avalible in the spicers but those were mostly limited slip type special order.

Plate is located on the drivers side door.

But that is not always true as 42 years of trucking causes replacments.

A quick measure is to jack the rear on stands and turn the drive shaft with the truck in netural. For each revolution of the wheel there will be multiple truns of the drive shaft. IE a 3.0 ratio will be 3 turns of the drive shaft to one complete revolution of the wheel. Gets you in the ballpark. and a place to start.

The retaining clip is available from Ford still. Shame on that dealership, they're a bunch of idiots to tell you they can't look up parts before 1980. They should have a speedo gear book that lists them all by tire sizes and ratios. It's in paper form! This new group of parts people coming into the dealers are useless!! I've been doing this ( ford parts )for 30 years and shame on them!!
Post your engine, tranny, and rear axle code off the door tag and I'll figure which gear you need. Tell those idiots it's not rocket science!!

Jack up one rear wheel, put a mark on the drive shaft and the tire you just jacked up, turn the tire one revolution and count the drive shaft revolutions. Ain't perfect but it will get you close!
