370 Flywheel to 460

I have a 370 4V that has a bad block. Can i replace it with a older model 460 and run the large cooling pump and thermastat housing? I will also have to use the 370 flywheel as it is lager than normal?

Sorry I can't help. I'm just chiming in to see if the 370 flywheel will fit. There's a 370 in the yard I go to and if the flywheel will fit I will snag it.

well the first thing irregardless of whether that flywheel will physically fit or not is the fact that an older 460 (1978 and earlier to be exact) is internal balanced and the 370 is external. next depedning on what it's in, the motor mounts are bolted to the front cover on some of the Lima engines, and the harminic balancers are much bigger and needed for the application.

Are you going to use just the block from the 460? And still use the internal parts from the 370?

That won't work either, the 370 has a 4.05" bore and the 460 stock is bored to 4.360.

The idea was to use only the 370 water pump thermostat housing and

Flywheel on a 460 (any year). The truck is a F700 and the engine is

Front mount. Will this work or do I need to rebuild the 370?

The biggest question is what year is the 460? then we can discuss the merits of whether it can be done or not. (get the casting number off the block right above the starter if it is anything but D9TE then the balance of the engines are totally different and the answer is a simple NO)

Monsterbaby are you them saying that if the block is a D9 block then yes it will work? I know one thing will kepp this sawp from ahppening and that is the crank. The crank is different on the 370 on that it has a longer snout and it's a larger dia. snout as well so for the swap to work it would have to have the crank swapped if the front cover and all is needed.

I myself would like to kow if the 370 flywheel is a direct bolt onto a 460 engine and of course balance for balance. Will it fit in the stock truck bell housing from an F150, F250 and a F350 truck?

Rideright, do you have the 370 flywheel out of the truck? If so could you count the number of teeth on the flywheel?

I do not have the 460 yet the junk yard down the road has 5 or 6.

If this swap is possible what year 460 do I need?

What I want to do is put the 460 in place of the 370 using the stock

Five speed and the oversized cooling pump.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

What do you mean snout? The front where the damper is or the flywheel end

The snout I mean the front of the crank where the balancer would mount to. The 370 has its own crank and if you need to swap the timing cover then you need to swap cranks as well. This affects your front crank seal and pulley locations.

RTM I Do have the flywheel but it is at my dads house I will count the teeth ASAP
I should not have to change anything up front unless the water pump pulley dos not line up

Well the problem is you are going to hve to use the 370 timing cover for the mounts, but the seal will not work with a 460 dampner, and the 370 dampner will not fit on the 460 crank. about the only way I know it can be done for sure is fabricate some motor mount perches and use 460 motor mounts and all the accessories on the front of hte 460. I don't see why the 370 flywheel will not bolt up as long as they have the same balance which would mean getting a 1979 or later 460

Talking

There is a seal available from NAPA that will solve the size difference
between the truck timing cover and the car balencer. I don't have my seal
book handy, but if you go by outside diameter/ inside diameter its easy to find

Thats right, you mentioned that before so a little searching and I found where you posted the # 18922 napa part number for that seal. Thanks for reminding me about that one.

Just to sum up. I should be able to make the swap if I use a 79 or newer 460, use the timing cover and the cooling pump off the 370 change the seal and bolt the 460 in.
