Engine "cough"

Engine "cough"
Hey guys, my 97 stroker has recently developed a "cough." It did it to me yesterday while it was idling and again today when I was shifting up through the gears. I'm not really sure how to describe it. It doesn't shut off it just "coughs" then continues like nothing happened. Is this a sign of the CPS going? Fuel filter? I gave her the coal this morning pulling up a hill and it ran fine. Any ideas?

Mine kinda did the cough thing, well more like run on 4 cylinders thing type bucking and hammering. I fueled up and when I went back out to my truck the only thing that comes to mind is that I started the truck, hit the brake, slammed it in drive and hit the fuel damn near at once so I didnt give my engine a chance to start and run for a second and then it got all bitchy at me when I stepped on the fuel it ran like a bucking horse. I shut her down, wait for a second, started back up and ran fine, never did it again since.
With your cough symptom, maybe it is the CPS, I think very soon I'm going to order one and chuck it in my glove box with a 10mm wrench for when the time comes that my engine dies for no reason at all. Plus the recent bad expearence I just had kinda put the fear of gawd in me a little

Ended up replacing the PCM.
I do not know if the two events were connected or if the first few episodes, those that prompted replacement of the CPS, were in fact resolved by the new CPS and the second set was a brand new problem.
All I know is that I no longer have any "coughing" as I happily motor along.

Thats excatly that.......also poor design, ECM's will actually generate heat just like your personal computer, 1994 dodge caravans, thee worst for the TCM(transmission controle modual) My buddy and I worked on this van for a week straight checking out all the wiring, had the dash opened up, everything, driving hundreds of miles with multiple ohm meters in wiring circuits to see what the hell was happening, we would drive along just fine then intermittently it will slam into limp mode on the tranny and would only have 2nd gear till you restarted the van. For ****s and giggles, pulled the TCM and yanked the cover off, found a burnt spot in the jelly I guess that covers the circuit board, replaced the TCM and its been 4 weeks since we dropped it off back to the customer. The guy spent thousands on this Van including one transmission and was going through this for over a year before we gave it a shot. So for sa good.

Wish I knew. I just chalk it up to "Sh** happens".

I've got a lot of experience with GM until recently moving to Ford. I know that GM when they first came out with computorized carbs really didn't have many problems with the ecm's. But around 86 or 87 they just went to crap. 1227248 was a popular ecm for replacement in the 88-90 W body vehicles. I noticed two distinct problems. Location and poor ground. Took one apart one day and you could see where the ground search skipped across the board. The PCM on my F350 looks like it is well built. I am not sure who makes it and as far as heat it is in a pretty good spot. Now my curiousity is goin. I'm gonna have to start diggin. Time to break out the shovel.
