96 F 250 brake light switch won't let truck shift out of park

My 96 F250's brake light switch won't let the transmission shift out of park. I have replaced the switch, but the problem still pops up from time to time. Some days a normal amount of pressure will set the switch and allow the truck to be shifted out of park, and other days, you'll swear you are going to break the pedal off pushing on it. I have taken the switch off and re-installed it a few times, and it seems to be better for a while..... So,,, Am i installing the switch wrong, or is the master cylinder rod worn down? Maybe a second bad switch??? Help!

Here's a picture. Are all the bushings in place and in good shape? Do your brake lights always work or have you never noticed?
