1993 f150 4.9L 248,000 miles. slow take-off, rough starts & jerking & pulsing 60mph++
hi everybody,
i have a 1993 ford f150 4.9L efi with 248,000 miles. Shes got a automatic tranny. Lately I have been experiencing rough cold starts, it takes about 2-3 keyturns to get her started. it sometimes has slow take-offs, for example taking off from stoplights, i can take-off and it hesitates and pulses up until reaching about 15 mphs. another problem is running above mphs and it once in a while loses momentum to the point where it jerks mildy and pulses. really noticeable when going over hills, overpasses, etc. any ideas?
i made a 800 mile roundtrip ran well except for those little problems. i got 18.6 miles per gallon. any advice is greatly appreciated. thanks

Try the simple things first.
When was the last time you did a tune-up? (plugs, dist cap, etc).
Has the fuel filter been changed recently? Sounds like you may have fuel delivery issues. Also check the condition of the fuel lines. Duel tanks? They are natorious for having issues.
Just a couple of things that come immediately to mind.

thanks guys,
this is to answer srercrcr : the hard starting stops when the engine reaches normal operating temp. the sluggish movement in highway speeds still happens when normal operating temperature is reached. one thing i noticed is it tends to happen more in traffic areas when the A/C is on.
this is to answer SR_Crewchief: thanks a tune-up was done about 1 1/2 years ago which included plugs, points, cap. its about time i change the fuel filter. it does have dual tanks, the rear tank does not function. my fuel gauge marker does not work either. yeah ive spoken with alot of other fellow ford owners like mine and they have had fuel tank problems.
thanks again guys.

Some of those problems sound similar to the ones I just had on my 95 F150. Have you tried to pull codes yet? I had a throttle postition sensor go bad that caused those issues. Then my rear fuel pump went bad (dual fuel tanks). The fuel pump also gave me similar problems that you are saying. Try getting codes. Its easy through the check engine light. If you don't know how to do that go to fordfuelinjection .com follow the steps. If you get all good codes (111) try checking fuel pressure at the fuel rail. I believe for the 300 it should be around 60 psi, correct me if im wrong.
