Buildin up on a 72 F100

Hey all just found this board, been lookin for somewhere to get info on these 67-72s...Not much out there...I got me a 72 F100 Explorer(D) w/ a 390 and C-6.In the middle of painting it(Gonna be dark metallic blue flake w/ 2 white stripes down the hood)and ordered some nice chrome wheels for it. Fixing it up right now..Overall its in good condition, Except the bed which is nearly rusted out, but have bedliner covering that up, untill i find another 72 Explorer bed..But on to my questions, Right now its only got a 2bbl carb..Now do i have to find a 4bbl intake? or will a carb adapter work? And the carb i have in mind is a Holley 600cfm Double Pumper yah or nay?. Also was wondering..If a ford 9" rear would be a good idea and would it fit?

9 inch Ford rearends were very common on F-100s, and may very well be what is currently under your truck. Dana 60's were used too, but I think 9 inches were more common.

Sounds like a good project. The truck already has a 9in rear. I don't think that you will see any noticable performance by adding a four barell carb. The FEs seem to run quite well on the two barells. It was a big disappointment for me, when I added one.

John, I was just curious what intake and carb you are using that you are disappointed with on your FE.

Boss the one reffered to was off a 352 car setup.

The fresh 352 now has an Edlebrock performer setup. The thing is, I can park it and get into my other ol banger truck, and it performs dang near as good. When I get into the four barell it just sucks the gas tank hard.

I have a 71 f-100 390 c/6 I bought new. I put a 4 barrel carb/manifold on it in 93 and wish I hadn't waited so long to do it. I first tryed a Carter, and then Edelbrock. After several changes and a couple trips to performance shops,it never did run right and was a gas hog. I put a Holly on and found an old mechanic that was a whiz at dialing it in. I also put Doug Thorley headers,Flowmaster exhaust on it. It still gets the same gas milage it did when I bought it,but with a BIG increase in power. I had heard alot of horror stories about Holly, blowing power valves etc, etc, but I havn't had any trouble with it.

You didn't say if you are after good performance and decent gas mileage or just performance but a Holley double pumper is strictly a performance carb. If you want better performance and decent gas mileage then put a 600 or 650 vaccum secondary Holley on it. Properly tuned it will let you "eat your cake and have it too".
It would also be best to use a 4bbl manifold, either used factory or new/used after market.

Been there, done that.

Well its a daily driver so im alittle bit worried about the mileage but when i first got it, it got around 5mpg due to a bad ignition, rust in the gas tank, bad carb, and a bad fuel pump..PLus some other little things (it sat outside for nearly 5 years) Soo i got used to that, Now its around 15-16mpg...So i got gallons to spare lol

15-16 Huh, Can I ask what rear end gear ratio you are running? I have a 390/4sp combo in my 69 F100 with a Dana rear end w/ apprx 3.5:1 (eyeballed the driveline while turning the rear wheels 1 complete turn) I don't have the right sized wheels in my truck so I can't check my mileage but I doubt I'm getting 15-16, probably more like 9-10. My 69 F100 has what I think is a Dana rear, my 76 F100 has a 9inch.

Dont know rear end ratio, But if your not runnin the right tire/wheel size it will hurt your gas mileage, Plus im runnin a 2bbl carb, new dual exhaust and No gas eating preformance parts at the moment

I've ran a few defferent holley carbs and found that the duel feed line carbs works a lot better. The single feed 1850 models I ran I had troubles blowing the O-rings out on the tranfer tube.

I know I'm splitting hairs here but what is the "right tire/wheel size"? Isn't that normally personal preference according to what you use the rig for?

Hi,

Just read your post...depending on your location I know of a junkyard here, in Kentucky, that had a fairly decent '70 sitting in the yard...looks as if someone parked it there last year! Anyway, the bed looked pretty good for a '70...if interested let me know and I can find out the particulars...
