Chevy24d and Tmod700,

Not to highjack a tread anymore than I have already, but, any idea why the 2008
3.31 is rated to tow more than the 3.73?

Where does it say that?

4x2's than 4x4's tow more due to the added weight of the transfer case and front driveline of the 4x4. That's the only difference I see.

In the new Ford Towing Guide

It shows that Only the Standard 3.31 Rear Axle with Optional HD Tow Package
is the ONLY Expedition capable of towing 9,200lbs
(both 4x2/4x4, Non-EL models)

The Optional 3.73 Rear Axle (on Non-EL models) with HD Tow Package is Only rated for 9,050lbs (150 pounds less)

The Standard 3.73 EL models are rated 9,000lbs for 4x2 & 8,750lbs for 4x4

It appears that to the get max rating from Ford on the Expedition that you can only get it with the standard (Non-EL) 3.31 axle with 4x2 or 4x4

The 3.73 axle on the Non-EL model drops the tow rating down by 150lbs.

This appears odd...

I think it's a misprint. Unless the 3.73 is only available in a 4x4 configuration and the weight of the extra mechanicals is decreasing the rating.

Anyone trying to tow 9000 pounds with a 3.31 axle will be a Pioneer. You remember the pioneers of old? They're the ones with all the arrows in them.

It has only to do with the gross coupled weight rating and the strength of the transmission used in the HD towing package. For every pound more the vehicle and its load weighs, the less the towed load can weigh, and in this case, its obviously not related to the axle ratio. Now, we might all be happier with the 3.73 for better acceleration, but it appears that the ratio choice is not related at all to the GCRW.
