Question Hoses?

So I was doing an oil change the other day ('94 3.0 shorty) and I changed out the air filter as well. Since i had the air box open, i decided to see just what's under the air box. Underneath, i saw another box with two **** like things on top directly behind the horn. On top of the box, there are two hoses. the right hose is totally shot, and I was going to replace it, but i have no idea what the box hor the hose is for, nor do i know where it leads to. Any ideas? Thanks.

Really smallhoses? Vaccum lines right? Should be a vacuum reservoir and an evaporative canister. If the hoses are somewhat largerr than vacuum lines, then I'm not sure what they'd be.

Glassbreaker:

Welcome to our FTE forum Just like Khan said, what you described there is the evaporative canister. One of the lines goes to the solenoid purge valve on the driver side of the engine, under the throttle body. The other end of the solenoid valve is connected to either a small nipple on the PCV valve or to the vacuum tree.

BTW! I've heard, that canister must be periodically replaced! Is it true?

They are considered to be a maintenance item. However, I don't think ours has been replaced. The carbon type material inside is designed to absorb gas fumes from the fuel tank, and release them into the engine dureing and shortly after startup. Eventually the carbon no longer absorbs the fumes properly.
