Oil Change

I hear some people change their oil every 3000 miles but others at 5000...any thoughts?

it all depends on how you drive. i personally change out around 3500 miles or so, but that was comprised of daily short runs a mile to school and back at the end of the day, not heating the oil up and thinning it out. i now drive to the Tech center everyday so i can warm up my engine, and catch breakfast. now i will take it to about 4000 miles, and then send in a sample for blackstone.

Do you use 15w 40 Rotella? I checked past threads which had different increments. I think 5,000 would be a safe bet since I really dont drive it that far but do pull a heavy trailer every know and then.

I change oil in truck every 5000 miles. I use 15w40 Torque Guard Plus 50 John Deere oil. After 5000 miles the oil is a nice amber color, and I can still read the imprints on the dipstick. The oil is a little more expensive $50 for 5 Gallon jug, but our JD dealer doubled the engine warrenty on our tractors if we use thier oil. We run it in all of our equipment, trucks etc... good stuff. It seems to have more additaves in it. It is almost sticky when you get it on your hands. Does anyone else use this oil in their truck?

I don't but it sounds intriguing.

That is what I use, (not sure if it is torque-gaurd, just the premium 15-40 JD oil, I haven't looked on the barrel for quite some time) Around here it is wayyy cheaper to have in bulk, or in a 55 gallon drum. I couldn't afford it hardley in the 5-gallon jugs, it was nearly half of that in the 55 drum.

thats what we use but we need alot of volume for our tractors, equipment, and trucks. We buy it in 55 gallon drums also, it is about 1/3 to 1/2 the price.

Hi-Tec record keeping

Whether you change every 3000 or 5000 their is a simple way to remember mileage:

change every 3K- use odometer and 3333-6666-0000 do your service
change every 5k-5-10-15-20

I maintain wife and kids cars and this is the easy way for me to remember

It seems to be pretty good stuff, and I figure if it can last in the harsh dirty enviroment that most JD stuff is in, it will probably work in my stroker. My stroker went from using about a half a quart- to a quart if you worked it hard with ford oil(oil it had since new) to not having to check the stick no matter what with the JD oil.

i use Rotella 5w-40 synthetic and love it. no more romp romp romp on startup, and it works extremely well on cold startups. builds pressure ALOT faster on startup.

I don't change my oil at all until the Labs tell me too, which is not often, because

of a bypass filter. Just one effective alternative.

I just changed mine at 15000 miles. Even with the Oil Guard, the oil was getting too dark for my comfort...had trouble reading the dipstick. Runs a little quieter now. Always been using Delo 400 since I got it at 79,000 miles last year in April. Now it has 105,000 miles. Between changes I do drain the bypass sump every 2000 miles without changing the bypass filter, and then add a qt of makeup oil. This replenishes the additives, and lets the bypass filter flow better. Without the bypass, I would be changing every 3000 miles, since my 100hp Pedator setting really soots up the oil much quicker.
