Holley carb - List 1738-1

I also posted this in the carb forum, but figured I would try your guys' knowledge as well. Thanks!

Can anyone tell me any information on this carb. I was in the barn and found this in an old milk crate. I am currently rebuilding a stock 390 and thought about rebuilding this carb for my application. I can't seem to find any information on the web about this carb.

Here's the information I got off the carb:
List 1738-1
ED5750898
894
241C
6R1429B

Any of this information useful?

Thanks,
Mike

OK, I have zero information on the carb, so where could you point me so that I can find out how many CFM, ect. that it is and if I want to use it or not? I need to buy a rebuild kit for it too.

Thanks,
Mike

cant find i whole lot of info on it...I would call holley.
Give them the List 1738-1 number..
I only show that it is a 4160 type carb...This would be a performance carb and parts are available.
At the most, if I had to guess, it would be a 600 cfm...which is really too small for any high performance FE.
I would go with a List 3310 carb which is now called a 750 Vacuum secondary carb. for good all-around High performance engines.

By no means am I going High-performance on my build. Basically everything is stock on this 390, but I put .02" Head gaskets on it, and am running the performer intake with headers. I also ported the heads a bit, this last weekend.

If it is indeed a 600 with vacuum secondaries, should be a decent carb for this right?

Thanks for the info. I appreciate it!

Yes, 600 is fine...You still should call Holley and find out for sure...They could even suggest a few replacement parts to get more out of it!

I just got off the phone with the guy and he said it was off a '58 383 and it's a 465cfm. That ain't enough, is it?

I would look for a 600 vacuum secondary. They can be found cheap...even new they aren't too bad if you go for the universal one...List 1850

However..I believe your carb and the 600 use the same main body...You may be able to just replace the throttle linkage plate with one from a 600...The difference in flow is the throttle bore size..
Again, I would follow Holley's advice on this...but, I have done this type of thing before...it is a cheap fix and cheap HP!
There are pages and pages of HP parts for this type carb, you can make it dance if you want too!!

That is the plate on the bottom, with the 4 butterflys, right? Right now, I need to get engine going, and out of my dad's shop, so I may just throw this carb in for the meantime. I also have a holley 4548-S, but that looks to only be a 450cfm.

Thank you for your time and information on this carb. I appreciate it.

I'd be sure to put that thing on Ebay

It might pay back enough to buy a new Holley 600.

Ebay doesn't have an antique carb section, do they?

In the present Holley List number list, they only go back as far as 1848-1. Which shows a 4160 of 465 CFM. I would suspect that your carb is in the 450 CFM class. Your best bet is going to the Holley site, http://www.holley.com/index.asp and go to Tech Service section to ask your questions. I doubt it is a 600CFM as the 1850 series was the first 600s.

Yes the 4548 is a 450, either will get her running...good luck and your welcome.

Yes, I meant the bottom plate, Holley only makes a few different main bodies and you can change your CFM rate by changing that plate, aslong as it is a similar carb to the larger one..

BTW, the 450 might be a better carb to start with..It is a 4150 series which should give better performance...sell the other one!

fomocofan: OK, I will start with the 4548. However, I already bought a rebuild kit for 1738. They should be same kit, shouldn't they. They look the same, on the outside, but I wasn't sure about internally being the same.(as far as all the gaskets/orings and such go.) I bought napa rebuild #2-5029. The instruction sheet that came with kit says for models 3160, 4150 & 4160.

Most of the gaskets will be the same. However, I believe the metering block gaskets will be different between the 4150 and 4160.
Just go to any speed shop and they should have a holley section..you can buy just the MB gaskets as a set for a 4150 or a 4160, unless your kit has both types.
Make sure you match-up EVERY gasket...I know some of them only have one little hole different...
