Fuel Additive

I know it's best to put a fuel additive in the tank before filling, but a couple times I haven't had it with me, so I fill up and add it later. Does anyone know how the inside of the fuel tank is configured as far as anti-slosh baffles that may keep the additive from properly mixing with the fuel when added after fillup? Thanks.

I feel that the truck moving around will mix with fuel. But I also feel that putting it in before fueling is best.

Your fine, but just don't do it every time. The DFA's must obviously be mixed well to work correctly, but there are no baffles from what I have read in the tank? If you had DFA's in the fuel that was int he tank it to will dillute with the new and the stuff you added when back home will eventually mix in as well.

Use in every tank and fill-up at 1/4 full or when the light comes on. Failure to re-fill soon enough can be a cuase for fuel starvation for the injectors if you let levels run to low and the pump starves for fuel... cuasing permanent damage to the injectors.

Again, when the light comes on... fill up (if not before)... and use additives in every tank fill-up (when you fill up)!!!

Trasmission fluid is "old school" and will clog and ruin your pump and injectors!!! Use PowerService, Howes, Standyne and other quality brand names and stay away from the "non-popular" brands or start-up brands.

I have a 04 250 with 225000 and I run 50/50 trans/diesel fuel. My tech saves the trans fluid for me and it runs great just change your filters as recommended and should be fine and its like I get 40mpg cause I only pay for half of each fill-up

I bought bulk bottles of Standayne but will go back to Power Service stuff from Wally World once I've used up all the Stanadyne. FWIW, I use the additive every other fill up...

question is for floorman70; does the trans fluid not "color" your fuel red? If so could it be mistaken for "offroad" fuel? Also does your truck run ok with this mix?

Any tech worthy of working on your truck should not mistake it for off road fuel. Keep your fillters changed on time and you can run 50/50 with no problems. Mine runs great on it and has plenty of miles to prove it. If possible make friends with a good tech and life with your PSD will be great.

Wow, a 3 year old thread comes back to life... well at least your post is relevant an on topic.

Hey, use what you want, but not many here will support the use of "used tranny fluid".

1) Tranny fluid was designed as a lubricator and not to be burned.

2) Tranny fluid does not compress and ignite as well as diesel fuel does in a compression/diesel motor.

3) Your filters are doing extra duty to filter out the "junk" in used tranny fluid and not just the stuff that MAY be in diesel fuel.

Curious how you have a 2004 truck and 225,000 miles on it and you only have 5 posts here in this site as of 2/21/10 @ 2:33pmCST????? With so few posts, it will take time for people at FTE to believe your claims of a 50/50 mix of tranny fluid and diesel fuel.

Don't get me wrong... but I and many here at FTE will not support or endorse the use of tranny fluid (used at that).... but I guess if it is working for you, that is great.

Thanks for the post and welcome to FTE.

I don't post much cause with all the great techs and info on here my 2 cents is not required. I do change my fuel filters every oil change (5k) and all my truck has ever had is egr delete 2 injectors ficm and fuel pump and have seen alot worse with alot less miles so all I'm saying is with proper maint. and good relationship with tech you can have great truck for long time. I do change filters twice as often as called for but my fuel bill is great

Hope you've saved enough $$$ for a replacement pump and injectors...that's where you headed running used ATF through your fuel system.

Like I said good relationship with tech goes along way. Parts a techs cost, and fuel savings does = me ahead of the game thank you
