somthing hanging from crossmember on tranny. what is it. can i remove it.

It is a vibration dampner.
You can remove it if you want, but why?

i wanted to take off the running boards and put the auto drop downs but that thing hanging down will be an eyesore

I have wondered about it as well. Was told that if I remove it, I will get a lot of fibrations from the tranny...in otherwords...don't do it.

I noticed the same thing under my 2000 X today while changing the oil. There is another one over the rear axle hanging from a cross member under the bed. Strange. My 2000 F250 set up the exact same way doesnt have those dampeners.

It's a government mandated "roll over prevention" counter weight. The NHTSA felt that a lot of Excursion owners would install lift kits, raising the CG and the possibility of a roll over.

The thing I am looking at isn't big enough to lower the center of gravity. I call BS on that.

Well, I took it off my X and the whole car promptly fell over on its side and I can't get it to roll back over onto the wheels.
