That sounds pretty good then. I thought about the whole 4.0 swap and I figured I'm going to be wanting some bigger numbers in the future so I might as well go that route.

I dont think this has been mentioned, but you can put later '95 or '96 heads on a motor with earlier '90 to '94 pistons and it will up the compression.

Comp also has a couple cams for the 4.0L.

With some head porting, proper engine management, headers, etc, it should provide a dramatic improvement for the 4.0L.

I'm just itching to do this to my '92...

I still would like to see some numbers on that new 4.5 stroker kit for the 4.0 ohv, the sohc kit will be comming soon, supersix motorsports has stage 1 through stage 3 heads for the 4.0. With a stroker, and stage 2 heads, I bet that would be some strong numbers. So far I have headers, catback, cai, e-fan, udp, and bama programer, and my 4.0 sohc motor runs strong, with a stroker kit, and heads, it should be awesome.

Ok now that someone else has finally mentioned a few things that I have discovered in the last month, and the list of mods to get the 4.0 to do what everyone said it couldn't, produce good power(without a super charger and for cheap).
Mods:
-v8 throttle body butterfly 1.00 junk yard
-v8 maf 84 mm (with v6 sensor installed on it) 20.00 junk yard
-k/n conical airfilter 35.00 parts store
-no cats**** time and weld
-adjustable ait chip 20.00 ebay
-swap rockers from an inline 6 use early adjustable type 200ci 25.00 junk yard
(1.46:1 vs 1.52:1)(change .4015 to .418=.0165 gain)
(equal to changing from 275 cam to a 286 cam)
-3” cold air intake 45.00 ebay intercooler tube
-electric fan 50.00 ebay
-24lbs accel injectors 120.00 ebay
-valve spring shim (.06”)
-mill heads .030” (mill manifold sides .023” bottom .044”)
should be no need to mill head use 95tm/97tm castings on early
lower ends to up compression
-underdrive pulleys 350.00 underdog
-increase valve size 1.8/1.4 not worth it/unknown

-total cost +/- 665.00
-total gain haven't dynoed yet

My 4.0 ran pretty good stock with 207 hp, and 235 foot pounds, with the mods installed, I'ld say there worth 25 extra ponies by how hard it acclerates, and it hard not to spin the tires. Just burp the throttle, and there turnning. Supersix motorsports has a break down of the 4.0, where it's weak points are, and how to improve them, also how to get the most out of an all motor 4.0, you should check it out. Are you planning on a dyno run, and how does it feel seat of the pants? Your done some interesting things, and cheaply I might add.

right now its just buttdyno, but after all of the mods are done I will dyno run it (I live next door to a dyno shop). however the 4.0 you have is an overhead cam 4.0 I have the unfortunate cousin of that motor which is the older model pushrod 4.0 which is rated stock 160 hp 225 ftlb. The sad thing is the pushrod motor was never really explored for its power capablities and there is no (and I mean no) aftermarket/performance part for the rodder 4.0. That is probably why I am reworking it, I have a thing for doing what people tell me shouldn't or can't. The primary reason the cammer 4.0 puts 207 and the rodder 4.0 puts 160 is very simple the cammer is a 9.7 to 1 compression ratio motor and the rodder is a 9.0 to 1 compression motor. The secondary factor is the 1.46 to 1 rocker ratio(the weakest I have seen in a production motor). But i appreciate the comment cheap is the key here I want to do a build that almost anyone can start with i don't believe the money is the answer to all things heart and soul is, money is for people without that, or who have to work to much just to have a little money.

A-men to that brother, allthough morana products does have a 4.5 stroker kit for your push rod motor, but there isn't much else.

Does anyone know the rocker shaft diameter for the 4.0L pushrod V6? I have an idea for a rocker arm swap that would gain you a LOT more lift if it worked...

ford small inline6 rocker shaft .7795/.78”
ford cologne v-6 rocker shaft diameter .7799/.7811
remember to check the total length and geometry through its movement at no time should the angle go past 45 degrees(even 45 is really pushin it), and whats the possible swap?

Well, this is a crazy idea, but I was thinking about the 1.73:1 ratio rockers of the big block FE. Problem there is, the rocker shaft is .839" to .840". You'd have to get a little creative to make those work.

Question

Ok, I'm going to go out on a huge limb here: but how much(if any) of this will apply to the 2.9L???

Alot should apply, 2.9, 2.8, and 4.0 are all in the same engine family, there just a bored, and stroked version of each other. I'm sure there have been some changes over the years, but for the most part, alot of these mods should work on a 2.9 I would think.
