Read all the posts on removing brake rotor. Will the bolt trick work for the rear rotors on my 99 Expy. All the post I've read were for the front rotors I believe. I'm not having any luck removing the rear rotors but this forum has given me new inspiration. Wish me luck.
my experience with the rear rotor is that it can be a little more work, but doable. the bolt trick you mentioned from a previous thread should work. i used rubber mallet and large screwdriver, however this might make the pros on this site cringe a bit... good luck
One obvious thing you may over look... make sure the parking brakes are not applied when trying to get the rear rotors off. If it's applied, no amount of pounding or pressing will help.
very true indeed. in my case, previous owner of my truck never thought to replace the rotor. so it was stuck on there pretty good. even with the parking brake off, had some trouble.
It may be necessary to back off the adjuster for the parking brakes in order to get the rear rotors off. If the rotor is loose on the hub and you still have resistance it is probably the parking brake shoes hanging up on the inside drum surface of the rotor.
The Expedition parking brake system is very similar to a standard drum brake system with access to the brake adjuster through a slot in the backing plate. Let me know if you need more info and I will take a peek under mine this weekend as it has been a little while since I had the rear brakes apart.
Tried backing off the adjuster but I could not move the star wheel. Even with the adjusting tool I picked up at Advance Auto. I believe their is a lever above the star wheel but I could not see it throught the slot. I'm about to give up and tow to a shop but I'd rather not.
mrjgp, I got back late last night, but if it stops raining, I will take a peek tonight. I can't remember if there is a self adjusting lever against the star wheel or not, nor can I remember which direction to rotate the star wheel, but I remember the whole job taking a lot longer than I anticipated.
There is no lever above the star wheel, just the coils of an extension spring which returns (releases) the brakes. I had the same problem and I just torched the adjuster in half from through the slot and purchased all new hardware. Cost from Ford dealer for all hardware (not including new brake shoes) was $21.00.
I'm having the same problem as mrjgp, including the adjuster being stuck. Will breaking the adjuster off with a chisel or something of that sort release the tension in the shoes? Or would I just be adding more to the problem?
I was going to tackle this myself, but I have decided after reading the above posts to be a weinie and pay someone else. I'll stick to oil changes, shocks, filters, etc...
00Eddie... give it a shot yourself first, usually it's not to bad, but sometimes they get a little (or a lot) subborn coming off. If that's the case, then you can always put it back together and take it to the shop and let them deal with it at that point.
