I get around 15mpg rain, hail or shine -- in other words, if I push hard, or tow, or drive around town or on the freeway, I get about 15mpg. My truck is still completely stock in the power-train. If I can believe the mpg display, I'm getting 18-22mpg at 60mph on the cruise control depending, I guess, mostly on head-wind or hills.
I tend not to fill up (why carry 44 gallons of fuel at 8lb/gal?) so I'm "only" putting in 20 gallons at a time. Averaging all the receipts so far, for 15K miles in about five months, I'm still somewhere around 15-17mpg, but lately it's been more like 15. I just did the latest recall and the thing is actually running pretty smooth.

I burn diesel with my '01 7.3 X. Stock I averaged 15-16.5 around town, about 17.5 on the freeway, and 17.2 combined. With an AFE Stage I intake (PROguard 7 filter), a 4in. MBRP system straight piped, an SCT X-Cal 2 set on 80hp/135TQ, and a light foot; I average about 17-17.8mpg around town and 20-21mpg on the freeway. This is doing 45-50 mph in town and 65 mph on the freeway unless I'm late. I got all my stuff from Discount Power Parts. They're an FTE sponsor and they'll take you to school on your truck. Check them out in the lower left hand corner, I did and now I have a severe case of PMS (Powerstroke Mod Syndrome)

I was getting 12 around town in my v-10, running medium grade unleaded. I switched to 10w-30 semi-synthetic and now I'm getting 13 to 14 around town. I haven't had it stretched out on the highway in a while.

I was told by a buddy yesterday that a hypertech chip would get me 20 mpg in my V10. That sounds bogus to me. Does anyone have personal experience with a chip in a V10? I currently get 12.9 mpg but I have a lead foot. I've gotten as high as 15 but I could only hold it for about 1 hour before my patience ran out.

I have a 2005 4X4 diesel.

I get about 13.8 freeway and 10 around town.

I fill all the way up and empty the tank (mostly) between fill-ups.

I am fairly certain that my driving habits are sub-optimal for mileage.

Still pretty bummed.

2000 V10 X 4x4:

Wife: 7-9 mpg City.
Me: 10-11 City.

Wife: 11-12 Highway.
Me: 13-16 Highway.

65-70mph gets me 15-16mpg with no head wind or hills.
70-80mph gets me down into the 13mpg range. Bad head wind or hills does the same.

All depends on the driver and thier style.

jscarb2, thanks for the info. Sorry, but I don't know the lingo. I guess a chip goes in the computer and the programmer connects to the computer.

I too run full synthetic-Royal Purple.

2000 Limited, PSD. NAPA air filter mod and Magnaflow exhaust very soon. I usually see 15 around town and between 18-18.75 on the freeway, speed control on and set at the posted speed limit. I'm hoping the exhaust gets me over 19. At every fill-up, I re-set the trip odometer and get a very accurate figure.

Not 20 but maybe 17 on the highway. On the V10 an air intake kit, Aeroturbine muffler, a tuner/chip and (most important) a light foot seem to yield the best mileage. Any chip or tuner will optimize and raise the fuel and timing curve to be more efficient while creating more power. It just a matter of what type of fuel is required and what other modifications need to be made to accommodate it. Hypertech is one of the few (if not only) companies that effectively tune for regular 87 octane fuel. All the rest require premium in order to achieve any results. With Hypertech, no other mods need to be made, it works with what you've got. You would however, notice more of a gain if you had a low temp thermostat, a cold air intake, and (on the V10) a different muffler. The exhaust system on the V10 is something that is very delicate. Once it is modified, you can gain in some areas, lose in others, or lose altogether. The only cost effective way to get a more power, more mileage, nice growl, and not lose any power, is to get an Aeroturbine muffler. Unlike Flowmaster, Magnaflow, and a most others out there, the Aeroturbine is a straight-through muffler; which means less restriction altogether. A few users on FTE and elsewhere have done this and love the results. (I was trying to find the thread on it, but the search function isn't working now) The only way to gain anything from dualing out the system or even doing a cat-back setup is to pay about $1200 on a full (headers, pipes, and all) JBA system or something similar. The Aeroturbine muffler will cost you about $200 (not cheap, but worth it), the tuner will cost you about $274 from Truck add ons (FTE sponsor, lower left hand), and the intake cost will vary depending on who you go with. These mods cost, but if you have a light foot and are conscious about how you drive, your wallet will thank you.

I guess I should add that when I'm in the X, it's usually loaded or even overladen. With two kids, two dogs, myself and my wife plus often two guest passengers plus all the luggages and the roof cargo box and I'm either carrying a dirt bike or a street bike in the rear hitch on a carrier and for Winter I have Blizzak snow tires.

If I really wanted better fuel economy in vehicle as large as the X, I'd look at aerodynamics -- some complete and serious about slicing away wind resistance and something that reduces road noise.

Cheers,
