Wags64;
Welcome to the best place for info on the entire line of fleet of Ford trucks; I would recommend you post your question under the 292 / Y block forum; there you will probably find a better and quicker reply to your question. Each forum site deals specfically to a certain area of our trucks, also at the being of this forum you'll find acouple of site's that help with identifing special features of 61-66 trucks.
Believe me those folks on the Y block forum really know there stuff about 292 blocks etc.
For what I find Ford like all truck manufactor's use acouple of rear end ration to correspond with the type of transmission; for example I have 65 F100 with came with a 352cid and automatic trans with a 3.25 rear end in one of my trucks and another is a 240 cid engine with a 3:55 rear end ratio. And some even have higher gear rear ends as well..
Again Welcome and hope this helps

Wags, Welcome to FTE The nations truck stop.
Both str. drv. and auto trannys have 1 to 1 output ratio. Overdrives have a higher output over inpute.
If no towing or heavy hauling is in your future something like a 3.00 rear might be good. The lower the number like 3.00 the better the mpg will be but it will also have less power at the wheel. A rear number like 4.10 would pull a house off the foundation but would suck at mpg.
First figure what your use is and go from there. The old iron just didn't have effecent built into it anywhere.
You don't have to run off to another forum to get good info. It can be had right here.

Need more help, looking at the tag in door jam for trans it says A and for axle it says 12 what do they mean. Trying to figure out what my 64 f100 292 has for trans and rearend 9" or dana. Need help Thanks Aaron Also what would be a good transmission to go with along with the 292, so I don't have the granny 1st gear and my gearing is higher for highway driving.
