mine started ticking at around 130,000 miles, and i've got 170k on it right now, so i don't think it's anything to worry about.

The ticking is the inline sewing machine (lol); probably valve lifters is my guest. Pull valve cover and check, I once even had stuck exhuast valve cause me to have a bent push rod. More than likely the old engine is just getting tired, and ticking is something that comes with age..

Mine has a ticking/clackety sound when cold and just warming up. Sounds like it's either the water pump or timing gear.

To get rid of my ticking, I used 5 quarts 20w50 and 1 quart Risolene. I tried 10w40 and some lifter addiditve, but it still ticked after the oil warmed up. The best solution is to replace the lifters, but until then it'll be 20w50. My truck had a lot of build up around the rockers and valves, so I imagine the whole engine is pretty sludged and the lifters may be somewhat clogged.. The next few oil changes I plan to use an oil flush, the kind where you add the flush, idle the truck for five minutes, then change the oil. So far so good with the 20w50 and Risolene, as I have about 100 miles on it after the oil change and still no ticks.

If my truck was a daily driver, it would get new lifters or a 460, but it's just a fishing and haul-off-the-trash truck. I'm fixing it up a little at a time.

That is kind of funny..."Let's see...I've got to drive this thing everywhere now, should I put in new lifters OR a 460....Lifters will take probably 2-3 hours, a couple gaskets and 1 busted knuckle. A 460 will take ???"

Some disparity in the choice.

LOL, He just ment if he drove it all the time he would want more power, I am guessing ,there not giving away gas tho to expensive for a huge engine like that I knwo cause my buddy has a 460 in his truck.. I myself never have done lifters before but Dont guess it would be to hard to do. what else on top should or could be replaced while I was int here doing that ? I think I will stick a new timing chain on soon as well, just to be safe.

No, I meant if my truck was a dialy driver I would put lifters in it. If my 300 is so tired that it needs lifters, then I would consider a 460. This is my opinion for my 2wd '79 F100 base model truck. I imagine it would be a lot of fun with a 460 in a short bed base model truck. Your opinion may vary.

Lets see, 114 HP six with 13 MPG or 300+ Hp pre-'73 460 with 10 MPG for a few hundred more? Not a hard decision for me. I could justify spending more money on a daily driver than I can a fishing truck. Of course, the 460 might take a little longer than an afternoon to install. The 300 six is a great motor, but it's no 460.

My recommendation is to try the 20w50 and 1 quart risolene if you don't live in the north and this isn't a daily driver. If it is a daily driver, the motor is otherwise good shape, I would go ahead and put on the chebbie 6 rockers since you have to loosen them anyway, and install new lifters. It sounds like you have a nice project truck.

Rislone. i spelled it wrong. It is an additive that cleans sludge, quiets lifters, etc. I'm leary of the snake oil addatives, but this stuff seemed to work. The main reason I used it is because my motor had a lot of build-up around the rockers and valves. I've been running some stronger detergents to try and get the motor cleaned up.

i'm not sure if the Rislone or the 20w50 is what quieted my lifters. Rislone comes in 1 quart bottle and i added it as a substitute for 1 quart of oil according to the directions. For more info on oil additives you can check out bobistheoilguy.com
The concensus is most addatives are snake oil, but this old motor in my truck is so grunged internally, it can't hurt to try for a few oil changes.

If you haven't changes the oil in that truck in two years, I would do that before I bought lifters.

Yes -Rislone does help clean out the engine. Its been around for years and I've seen results as well. An engine flush at the oil change wouldn't be a bad idea either.
