Question Just a few questions ....

I just had the Mazda dealer do an oil change on my new to me 02 Tribute.{65000 miles}They would not put in Mobil 1 5w30 as I asked. They said not to run any synthetic oil in it.{it is the v6 engine}They put dino mobil 5w30 in it.Why did they say not to use any type synthetic oil in this engine?{other then they don't get to change the oil as often}.I don't have a problem with useing dino oil but I run Mobil1 5w30 in the 96 Ranger and I used it in the 96 Explorer that I just traded on the Tribut.I never had a oil related engine problem with either one.I would like to use it in the Tribute if it will not hurt it.

Also while I was there I had the transmission flush done.It needed it ,the fluid was a brownish-red.They said they used m30 transmission fluid in it.Does anybody know what kind of transmission fluid m30 is?

Yes you could have used synthetic oil. I would find a new shop.

I agree. I've used Motorcraft semi-synthetic in both Escapes. I have no idea what M30 tranny fluid would be (Mazda 30?) but your CD4E transmision requires plain Mercon (notice I said plain Mercon).

There is an urban legend that warns against switching to synthetic oil on high mileage vehicles. I wouldn't consider 65K miles high mileage, so I don't have a clue why they said what they did. Too bad you didn't ask them why, as the response would have been interesting and maybe even entertaining.

FWIW, I have been using Mobil-1 5W30 in my Escape for a some time now, using 5K mile change intervals, and it works great. I initially used Motorcraft 5W20 for the first 2 or 3 oil changes because it was recommended by Ford. Then I found out that Ford specifies 5W30 for the Duratec in other parts of the world where CAFE isn't an issue. Read into that what you will.

They put the wrong oil in anyhow! 5W-20 is what is recommended.
Only Mercon tranny fluid should be used

Run away from that shop as fast as you can, they are idiots.

My Mazda dealer also doesn't recommend synthetic oil in my Tribute but that is because my Mazda dealer doesn't stock a synthetic oil. My Ford dealer has no problem putting Pennzoil synthetic oil in my Tribute if I take it to them nor does Jiffy Lube when I use them. This seems to be a Mazda issue.

No, it's an idiot issue.

Ask them for a reason, there is nothing that they can say that can't be constituted a "myth" about synthetic oil.

It is better than dino in just about every way.

Agreed, that's why I no longer use the Mazda dealer.

Greenwood SC has very few 0* days and I use 5W-20, just like it says to in the manual. What's wrong with that?
