Any 4.9L I6 F150 Owners Out There?

I have a 300cu.in. 2wd automatic F150. Are there any other proud owners of this solid truck out there? I would like to know what feedback you have on your F150. My truck is a 1990 and I love it! I haven't had any major problems and my truck runs great. It doesn't have nearly the power of the V8's, but it gets the job done for me with reliablity and great fuel economy.

I have a '94 f150 4x4 300 ci with the 5sp and I love it. I bought it new in '95 and with 92k on it, it has done everything I have wanted and somethings that it was never supposed to do. The low end power is great but that is what a truck is supposed to be about.

Nope, haven't seen any here
Seriously folks I have to agree, My 92 4.9L E4OD XLT is the best vehicle I have ever owned. It is part of the reason Ford is going bankrupt, the trucks lasted a little longer then Ford had planned.
I pray every night that the parts will always be available for my truck, I want to keep driving it a long time.

I have 5 of them.

One 89 with the 5 speed, and four 95's with the E4OD

Unlike the others, I can't speak well of my 91 F-150 300. Engine required total rebuild at 90,000 due to head gasket leaking into oil undetected for some time causing the crank bearings to wear out. The heater core leaks, the u-joints went bad, gas mileage sucks. Now it won't start and the codes pulled don't really tell you what part it is that went bad. I changed ecu and fuel pressure regulator and still no start. Ready to give up on the old clunker. Hope you have better luck with yours.

I bought my 94 F-150 XL5 sp. 4x4 w/ the 4.9L about 4 months ago. She had about 188,000 miles then, almost 196,000 now. I Love My Truck! As soon as I got 'er I did a full tune up, and over the next few months I'm basicly resoring/customizing the entire truck. My brother-in-law asked me today, "You're not actually gonna fix up this truck are you?" I then explained him that it was the exact truck I had always wanted. He didn't get it. He said, what about a V8 don't you wish this thing had a V8? He didn't believe it had more stock torque than chevy's most popular V8 back in '94.

Are you talking about the 350?
That has to have more than 260 ft lbs?

If you're talking about a 350, it's definitely got more torque than the 300.

But I'd still rather have my 300.

Sounds like you picked up a truck that the previous owner didn't take care of very well. Remember, just because someone was careless and overheated the truck doesn't mean it's a clunker. ANY vehicle not properly maintained will give problems. I'd say that most of the people on this forum are pretty particular about how their vehicles are maintained.

Also, do you have a thread going on your problems? I think replacing the ECU would be the last resort, but it sounds like it was one of the first things you did. Whoever recommended that to you doesn't sound like he has much experience working on this generation of trucks.

I rescued mine(94) from a hvac fleet, absolutely everybody drove it and nobody maintained it.(173000mi)I changed oil and filter, cleaned it up,a little paint, alittle tlc.It runs good(needs a tuneup) but i expect it to last a lot more miles now that I am taking good care of it.

Mine is a 94, about 107k. I've had to replace the starter a couple times, had the throttle body gasket replaced, wiper switch, window switch, done some exhaust work (minor stuff, rebolting shields, rebuilding hangers), replaced water pump, thermostat, and belt. The rear tank fills the front tank, but it doesn't bother me YET. U joints went bad too. Oh well, it is 12 years old...I used it to haul home an 88Accord on a Uhaul trailer, plenty of power. Now if Ford would get the recall parts in for the CC, I'd get that worked over.

I have a 1996 2WD 300 4.9I 5 Speed, and although i enjoy driving it sometimes. It is the worst engine Ford ever made. My friend has a 94 F-150 Auto with a 302. Not only does my truck come stock like a low rider, But it Has the worst Transmission in it ever, its a Mazda Transmission, Its the M5OD. Not only does the 302 Smoke it in Speed, But towing it does outstanding. compared to my truck where i had trouble hauling a Washer, Dryer, and a Dinning Room Table. Not only does the engine bog down when you try to haul something, trying to take off on a hill with the washer, dryer, and dinning room table. I had to practicly stomp the gas to get up a steep hill. Where the 302 you barely notice you are hauling anything. I took it off road once, in just muddy puttles. And i practicly burnt up my clutch. And i only got stuck to the point where i was spinning the tires constantly about twice. So there is no reason it should have burnt up. Not only is the 4.9I 300 they worst engine i have ever seen. It seems to the have the most problems with 120,000 Miles. I couldent start to list the parts i have put into my truck. My maintence book is unbelievably long. To sum it all up the 4.9I 300 is the worst engine Ford ever made, It can tow as much as the 302, But not as well, if you have a manual, you are guarenteed to burn up your clutch. And it is the worst engine for power i have ever seen in my life. My next truck will definatly be a 302, or a 351. In my eyes there is no reason to even make 6 cylinder trucks, I have no use for them. Anyone who wants a real truck has no use for them.
