On a new rebuild there is no need for a high volume pump and yes it will put additional load on the cam/distributor gears and the oilpump drivehsaft of course.
Oh hell yes a high volume pump is a good idea, these engines with stock pumps usually don't have much oil pressure to begin with, and as the engines wear it gets lower. Also the high volume pump can pump oil better on cold mornings to bearings and valve train etc.
