My girlfriend's '99 F150 with the 4.6 seems to be slowly drinking water and in the cold weather I've noticed foggy exhaust even once the truck is warmed up. Is it common for these engines to blow head gaskets? If so, is there an issue causing it that I can fix? Thanks, phillip
167,000mi. Had it since about 40,000mi, Mobil 1 always used. It's never overheated. It runs great, plenty of power, starts well, etc. It just looses both water and oil, no puddles ever found. No fouled spark plugs, no mis, really no issues besides the water and oil.
Know the 97, 4.2's had intake gasget probs. Haven't heard anything about the 4.6s but sounds like a head or intake gasket to me. Pretty easy fix either way if you've got the time and tools. Check the oil, if it looks less than clear stop driving it before it gets serious.
Oil has always been totally clean. Seems like it's just misting into the cyl and burning off when running. Strange, huh. The leak must be VERY small. -Phillip
I think grsyhands is right it might possibly be an intake gasket leaking. Our 99 suburban's intake was starting to leak, common gm problem. My 97 F150 4.6 has 178000 on it plenty of power but no leaks from head or intake gaskets.
