Thumping sound from Rear A/C (Exp EB 2003)

Can anyone help me? I have a thumping sound (about evey 2 seconds) coming from the back quarter panel, behind the Fold Flat buttons. I have no idea what is enclosed in there, but when I turn my rear A/C on it is VERY loud. When the A/C is off, it is considerably quieter, but still very annoying. I don't even know how to remove the panel to even see what is in there. I've tried to look through the slats in the grill back there, but that is almost entirely useless. My A/C still works, but I am afraid to use it because of this noise. Any ideas?

Has this ever happened to anybody? Even if you do not know how to help me, is there anybody that has had this problem? I just want to have an idea of whats wrong with it before I take it to the shop.

Someone must know how to get the inside quarter panel off behind the fold-flat buttons?

Same problem on my 2003 EB. Sounds like a blend door snapping shut.

My '03 makes the same noise on the right side behind the 2nd row seat in the pillar, it's the rear AC some sort of actuator I believe. It goes away after a few moments of playing with the rear AC control.

I've tried playing with the controls, but it never goes away. Even when the A/C is off is still thumps. I'm going to have to take it in for service.

This happened on the GSA Expy I drove over in the desert last year. It's the A/C compressor for the rear air. From what we could tell while doing some no-shade tree mechanicing, the noise is the rear compressor/tank filling up and the valve opening and closing because it is getting a bad signal from whatever sending unit controls the dang thing. Never could figure out how to fix it other than disconnecting the rear air, which was not an option when it's 120 F outside. The rear panel is pretty easy to remove, just start pulling from the rear lower portion and pop the push screws out slowly. When you get to the power buttons and if you have a 12v power outlet, just reach behind the panel and pull the quick-connect apart, the buttons should stay in the panel. Don't be scared to pull on that panel, you won't break it and it will go back in if you don't destroy the pushscrews in the process. I think there was a few screws in the cupholders and other spots, but not many, mostly pushscrews.
It didn't seem to hurt anything, as the truck cooled off quickly, but man it is dang sure annoying!

This link doesn't work for me. Anyone find the answer to this yet? I have this problem and before I take the panel off I'd like to know if I can fix it myself or not?

Thanks.

Not sure how hyperlinking works here in the forum posting, but that one got corrupt at the end. Try again, but when it fails, edit the address in your browser address bar. All the way to the right, there is an extra '%' and an extra '20'. Between the words there should only be '%20' not '%%' and not '2020'. HTH

Thanks that fixed the link, but I'd already found that post. It really doesn't address replacement of the actuator or door. I know that's the problem. I guess I'm just trying to figure out how hard a job it is for a D-I-Y'er.

My truck just started doing this exact thing this weekend. Did you ever fix yours? If so, how?

Well since I'm out of warranty, I haven't had much interest in taking it to the dealer for a fix (especially since the weather has been so nice). From what I was able to gather through info on this website, its caused by a device called a blend door something. Its essentially a flap that keeps bouncing up and down (softer when the air is turned off, louder when it is turned on). The quick fix to make the noise stop is to adkjust your rear air controls in your backseat. With tha rear-air turned on adjust the colder/warmer dial to about 11 o'clock or until the banging stops. That worked for me (albeit temporarily), I hope it works for you. As the summer nears (I live in S. Florida), I will need to get this really fixed, I'll post costs and such when that happens. If you do get it fixed let me know as well. Good Luck!!

Thanks for the reply. You're right, we've found on ours that if you back it off about 2 notches from max cold, it will stop completely.

If you tear in to yours before I do, please post your results. I'll do the same. Thanks again.
