Went to go buy some Rotella

I went to go buy a 5 imperial gallon pail of Rotella 15w-40 from the bulk fuel supplier and they said they can't get it because their is a shortage of it. Supposidly its all going down to the hurricane relief Shell has allocated so much supply for export.

So so much for trying a new brand of oil as I have read Rotella 15w-40 works better in PSDs over Delo 400. When I changed the oil in the truck when I got it I put Delo 400 into it. I bought another 5 gallons of Delo today so I will run another 4800 kms.

You guys in the States must us Shell oil products allot if they don't have enough supply to sell to suppliers in Canada.

I was thinking about Synthetic oil but I would have to order that and I'am looking at 120 dollars for the oil. I also read that synthetic oil loosens up the crud in the engine. With unknown history of the engine supposidly its a rebuilt but I don't think it is. I'am not going to chance it if I convert to synthetic and it loosens the crud and plugs the filter and I have to change the oil again it will be pretty expensive.

I will stick with the Delo 400 for now.

Man, how small a town do you live in? I think your distributor was just giving you the latest excuse, they can get all they want, but was probably sold out. No doubt, he just wanted to make sure you will come back and not realize his inventory guy isn't on the ball to have enough stock on hand. Especially if you are a commercial client, which he probably thought, when you asked for it by the pail. Call them up in a week or so, and ask again just for fun, i'll bet he has more than you'll ever need.

I just picked up 200 gallons of Rotella T 15w40 at the local bulk distributor. He still had well over 1000 gallons in the warehouse, in pails and jugs. You can also buy it in the gallon jugs too, price is about the same, at least for me. $2.74 per liter canadian, and you don't have to struggle with the pail. If you do the math you'll find that is about the same price Canadian Tire sells it for when they put it on sale. On the same note, you can get Rotella T 0w40 100% synthetic there for $23.99 a gallon a couple times a year when it's on sale too. That's $2 less than the distributor will sell it to me for. You just need to think ahead as to your yearly needs.

Changing oil at 4800 km, why? You should get 8000 km between your oil changes. I've been doing oil analysis by Blackstone since i bought my trucks, and never had any oil breakdown by going at least 8000 kms. that's 4800 miles, maybe that's what you meant. Sure the oil looks black, but the point is it's still efficient.

The bulk dealer that I went to has been servicing this stretch of coast for probably 20 years plus. They are a independant dealer so they carry Chevron,Shell and Pennzoil lubricants. I have never had any problems with them before. They do sell allot of oil and grease this is a resource community so the Forestry contractors,Fishermen and Excavation contractors go through allot of oil.

For a 5 gallon pail of Delo 400 is 65 dollars tax included I forget what a box of 4x4 is worth I usually buy 5 gallon pails I have a 4 litre jug I use to take from the pail. Its a old Brita water filter jug works good.

The reason why I change my oil at 4800 kilometers is the truck weighs 8400lbs empty and we have 6-10% grades and not straight roads so engine is working pretty good.

To give you a idea on how bad the roads are max life out of set of Michelin LTX M/S steer tires in the 235/85R-16 size is 18,000kms (11,185 miles) which is on dually 4x4s or old F-450s like mine that run 16" rubber. I ran cheap Cambodian tire tires only got 13,000kms out of them (8078 miles).

This is the second oil change since I owned the truck the first one was to collect up the crap in the engine as I don't know what the previous owner etc was like with maintenance.

Thats what oil costs here you also have to remember we deal in imperial gallons and litres. The Delo 400 I bought costs 3.01 Canadian before tax for a litre or 1 quart.

ford390gashog,

you have to remember there is a constantly changing exchange rate to factor in too.

That posted $3.00 a quart/liter is actually worth about $2.58 in greenbacks today. A couple of years ago, it would have been $1.95 greenbacks per quart. On top of that the liter is larger than a quart, enough to notice if you put 15 liters in your engine instead of 15 qts. 1 liter = 1.057 qts, or 1 quart = .946 liters

Then there is also the little factor of the appreciation of the cost of a barrel of oil. I noticed it hasn't affected the motor oil market in the US too badly yet. A couple of years ago, i was getting Rotella T for around $2.00 per liter, but now it's up to $2.74 even with the volume discount i get.

The Walmarts in Canada don't seem to stock heavy duty oils, i'd love to see pails of Rotella, but don't think it will happen anytime soon. They carry the house brand, but i only use that in my older Cat crawlers. I try to pick enough synthetic oil for all my trucks for the year whenever i have to venture down into Minnesota and pass near the wally world. I'll have to think about picking up 10 pails of rotella if they have it on my next visit. Should do me for the better part of the year, and save enough to more than pay for the trip.

When you think of it a 65 dollar pail of oil and a 28 dollar Wix filter is cheaper than replacing a PSD which will cost us Canadians 7 grand.

The places where I can buy engine oil from is the local gas station but they only sell Petrocanada oil. The local building supply sells Chevron but they buy it from the same place I do. There is a Canadian Tire but they only sell their own brand of engine oil and the local parts store only carries Pennzoil which I'am not so keen on using for my engine oil.

if you can find the pennzoil long life diesel oil then use that. it is rebottled rotella. SOPUS dropped the pennzoil oil and just fills them with rotella.
