460 Heads
The 429 has a shorter stroke and different rods. The advantage if you look through the old engine books was that the 429 made more HP on the top end at a few more RPM. Shorter stroke usually means higher RPM. I ran a 72 429 in my 79 4X4 for years. I ran the 70 heads DOVE casting with the small combustion chambers to get the compression up. I have run the DOOE heads (CJ) on the 429. They are a direct bolt on but if you dont have enough cam and compression you will loose a bit of bottem end torque for the change.
The intake runners are much larger on the Dooe heads and require porting of most intakes to match them up. Motorsport aluminum heads are down to around $700 each but I believe that is bare. 429 or 460 your best bet is probably C8,C9, or D0ve casting heads unless you really want to get serious.
I just steped up to Dooe heads on my new 524" motor and we run them on the sand truck with the 541" motor as well.
Hope this helps
