'01 Explorer Sport rear diff whine....
Hello...
OK, this seems to be somewhat common with the Explorer.....
I have a 2001 Explorer Sport 4x4 (automatic) with 118,000 miles on it.
When driving 30-50MPH, I get a "whining" "whistling" from the rear diff, also, it's there on the highway, but city speeds it's more notable. (it's not extremely loud, but it's there and you can hear it)
If I'm on the gas and "let off", I can hear a bit of a slam in the rear, and when I give it gas again, I get that slamming sound/ feel in the rear too. {sounds sick, I know.... : )}
Also, when I put the truck in reverse, I get a decent slam to the rear diff area--most of the time. This occurs in drive every once in a while, but not more than often.
I had the U-joints inspected and they told me there some wear, but overall they are good and there's no need to replace them at this time....they said what I'm experiencing is probably coming from the rear diff.
So is this the rear diff issue that seems to be characteristic with this truck?
Also, can anyone educate me with my options and perhaps make some suggestions?
What's the cost of a reman diff?
Thanks everyone!!
