1997 F-150 EGR? mileage and pinging
What effect does a bad EGR have concernin mileage and ping. My 97 F-150 180k on tossed a code for bad EGR and restricted EGR. I was woundering if this might cause the sevear pinging no mater what grade of gas and the reduction in mileage I have had.
Thanks in advance.

Depends on what your actual EGR system fault and codes are. Since you didn't specify, we can only guess.
An EGR valve that is open at the wrong time can cause the symptoms you described.
This can be caused by a defective valve (stuck open) or a failure in the control system that is keeping it open such as a defective solenoid, DPFE sensor, or PCM.

Well I went to replace it this morning about 1/2 way though I had to go buy a wrench. So I put most of it back together. Drove up to the parts store and no check engine light. Is it possible it was stuck and me banging around it freed it up? I went ahead and finished changing it out but have not driven the truck.
Thanks

Well went out for a drive and it was fine( still pinging though) for about 1/2 an hour. Then the check eng light came back on. So back to the parts store, code was P0401...Egr flow insuff. Last time there were 2 codes the other was resticted flow. Don't recall the number. He cleared the code with the reader. Drove it about 2 mile back home and the light is still off.

I know that this is an old post but I wanted to add to it for future searches.
The EGR valve is controlled by the DPFE sensor. This sensor has been a problem for Ford in the past and is well documented in the 3.0L Rangers. The part itself is about $50 at the parts store and can be changed out in about 5mins. I would be willing to bet that your problem is DPFE related.

Well I replaced the DPFE, same thing truck would run for a day no code then same code will show up. So I changed the egr again, no help. I also changed the DPFE again. Looks like it was the 1st DPFE, after replacing it no more codes. Just finish the second tank of gas and my milage is back to normal. I do have the pinging still. It pings under slight accel or hard accel. It seems to only happen after the engine has warmed up. Any thoughts.

I noticed that everyone on here keeps talking about codes. Well my 02 supercrew 5.4 gets horrible gas milage. So bad that I have thought about selling it. I get about 12-13 town and it doesnt seem to get any better on the interstate.
I owned a 98 Eddie Bauer Expidition with a 5.4 and on the interstate I could get about 17-18 driving about 72. What can I check for and where can I go to get the codes that I see in all of the posts on here?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
