1991 F150 cruise control problem

My dad has a 1991 F150 with the hang on type of cruise. His Ford manual only shows wiring diagrams for the kind in the steering wheel. The wire colors are all different, and he can't seem to make heads or tails out of it. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the type of cruise he might have. He's trying to figure out why it's not working. Thanks for any help you might be able to give us.

So you think this was a dealer installed Ford unit? Or is it an aftermarket unit? Maybe you can find a label on the control box or the servo unit?

I'll ask him to find a label if there is one. It was on the truck when he purchased it new from the Ford dealer, but it's not shown at all in the manual. This kind of leads him to believe it might be aftermarket.

Okay, I got some information for you. My dad looked on the amplifier box and found a part number. It is #202-3135. He also found what he believes to be a serial number. And, oddly, a number that says date, and appears to read 2/5/61. He said his cruise control is located on a "smart stick" coming from the steering column. He said it has about 5 wires running from the smart stick to the amplifier, but the colors are all different for any wires shown in the manual for cruise located on the steering wheel. Hopefully this will give you some more info. I tried just looking up the part number, but I didn't get anything. Thanks so much for any help you can give us.

Those numbers don't ring a bell. Maybe they will for someone else. Or possibly the dealer has a clue to what is on there.

I can give you a basic idea of what's involved in most cruise controls.

You need a speed reference signal. This is usually tied into the speed sensor wiring that goes to the speedometer and the abs system, and also goes to the engine computer.

You need a signal from the brake switch. And if it is a vacuum system, you also need a vacuum switch on the brake pedal. By vacuum system, I mean the unit that pulls on the throttle cable is a vacuum diaphram. It could also be a electric servo motor with a cable or chain.

And then you have the cruise controls themselves which you said where on the stalk.

If I were to guess, I bet this is an aftermarket system. Do what you can to fix it, but I don't think I would take it anywhere to get it worked on. A whole new unit from the parts store is probably way cheaper than paying someone to fix the one you have.

Two problems I know of with the after market units.

The magnet that is on the drive shaft can move, fall off or the pickup sensor by the drive shaft can bend out too far to be influenced by the magnet.

The other problem is that the little ball chain like in an old light switch can break going to the throttle on the carburetor.

Identical Aftermarket Cuise Modual in '89 Tempo

Greetings, I found this discussion by searching Google for 202-3135. The cruise quit working in my Tempo years ago, and I'm finally getting around to fixing it. Fortunately my module does list what wires should be where. The problem is part of the sticker rotted away. Here's what I can tell you. If you hold the module so that the connectors are to your left, and the bigger connector is on top, here's what the pins are:

9. Not used
8. Black - Ground
7. Blue - Speed
6. Black - Ground
5. Yellow - ***** Valve
4. Brown - *****lve
3. Green - *****e
2. White - ****ve power
1. Red - Ignition

5. Red - Power
4. Orange - Off
3. White - Accel
2. Yellow - Decel
1. Brown - Resume

The * are where the sticker is missing. I know the yellow, brown, and white wires go to the vacuum servos. The green might go to the brake and clutch switch. Looks like I'll have to cut all the wire ties to see that. But might as well save for now so what I have written thus far doesn't get lost.

Also, if anyone is interested, I can scan what I have of the sticker and post it. Even though this is a very old post, hope it helps somebody.

How do you edit posts?

Wish I knew. Since I don't, here's my correction:

9. Not used
8. Black - Ground
7. Blue - Speed
6. Black - Ground
5. Yellow - ***** Valve
4. Brown - *****lve
3. Green - *****e
2. White - ****ve power
1. Red - Ignition

6. Not used
5. Red - Power
4. Orange - Off
3. White - Accel
2. Yellow - Decel
1. Brown - Resume

The * are where the sticker is missing. I know the yellow, brown, and white wires go to the vacuum servos. The green (3) goes to the brake and clutch switch. It's ground unless the brake or clutch is pressed. White must be the valve power. It gets 12 volts when you turn the module on. Seems the brown turns on the main servo, and the yellow controls two other servos to actually control the speed.

After all my testing, my cruise still doesn't work. I get AC voltage from the speed line (7) that is proportionate to the speed. My ground and supply voltage look good. The brake and clutch switches definitely work. I can verify the unit is on when I turn it on, but I'm still unable to set it. So I've scanned the circuit board for the module (amplifier) to see if I can trouble shoot it down to component level.
