Key starting to not work

Hey,
Did a search and nothing came up.... So, question is my key is starting to not work well in my door handle on my 97 f-150. I went and got the spare key thinking that my daily used key was wearing out, but the new spare key had the same problem. I have to lightly wiggle it in the turing motion and then it works. It sometimes goes quicker than others but in the sub zero weather here in Montana it is kinda getting to be a pain. Anyone else have this trouble? If so, what was the remedy?
Second question is a quick squeal + mild grinding when first starting it at the beginning of the day. Kinda sounds like a dry bearing but quits after a couple of seconds and only does it first start of the day, then good to go after that with no noise. Initial thought is the starter going bad, but it only does it the first time I start it for that day. Could it be something else?
Thanks,
Rob

I don't know about your second problem, but your first problem should be easy to fix. We had the same problem with our 1997 F-250 LD. If you look at your local auto parts store you can find some lubrication with graphite for automotive locks. Make sure you get the stuff with the graphite. It might take a few applications, but since we've done ours we haven't had a problem yet.

My 97 has the same thing happen every so often, only on the drivers door though. I usually dip the key into a little oil and work it in and out of the lock a couple times and that cures it up for a few months.

Powdered or liquid graphite is the best lubricant for locks, hot or cold. Available at most auto parts stores, locksmiths & hardware stores. Oils like WD-40 have water in them.

Thanks! I just happen to have some graphite lubricant in the shop and will give it a try! Well, thanks again I really appreciate it. I guess I better stop by my service center this week and make sure I get the better part for my cruise instead of the band-aid after the 16th, and see if they will get my 97 cruising down the road again!

Thanks again!

I also have the sticking lock thing with my '97. Its more of a nuissance than anything. I did lube up the locks when I got the truck a few months ago...but it wasnt the graphite stuff. I'll have to try that stuff.

WD40 seems to be a short-term fix. When we used it, it only lasted a week or so. That graphite stuff works good.
