Question 97 F350 Gauge Install

Well, my gauges are due to come in on Friday. I'm not sure if I'll be able to work on it this weekend as I have a meeting with my bow and a 10pt buck.

Anyway, I went with auto meter sport comp gauges and I was looking over some instructions for the pyro guage. It says to install it post turbo, 1-2 inches from the turbo exhaust outlet. Wouldn't this be in the down pipe?

Also, it says to place the guage in an existing 1/8th NPT hole, which I think doesn't exist. What size bit do I use to drill the hole and tap the hole?

It also says I can drill a 9/16 hole and weld in a bushing for the fitting. I have a friend who could put jesse james out of a job in welding skills, so he could do it for me. anybody done this method?

And finally, as far as wiring I was thinking of buying one of those pre-made harnesses from DPP to save time. Anybody use one of those and will they work for auto meter?

Sorry for the long post, but it's really only 4 questions.

put your pyro preturbo..........................

buy yourself an 11/32 drill bit and a 1/8npt tap(can be bought at any local hardware store....the wiring is simple. all you really need is to buy a little bit of wire to make a few power and ground connections. i will pm you some directions. they are the best ive seen anywhere. you will have to copy and paste the link

Gauge makers advise post turbo placement because it is easier. Some after market downpipes even come pretaped. If install is easy more people will do gauges so they make more money.

When you place the pyro post turbo you will be measuring the exhaust gas temp at a point where it has cooled significanty as it passed thru the turbo, a very good heat exchanger. Thus you will never know the actual EGT. The discrepency can be as much as 400 degrees, thats enough to turn your engine into a doorstop. Unfortunately the biggest discrepency will inevitably occur when the engine is working hard under a big load. That is exactly the point when your EGT is likely to be at its highest and when you should monitor it closely.
Pre turbo placement will give you a much more accurate temp. You would have to put the probe into a manifold to get an exact reading but placing it at the Y where the two sides join together will give you a very accurate read of the actual EGT
What you have to ask yourself is whether you want to know what the EGT is or guess what it is.

Steve Baz gives good instructions on Pre Turbo mounting

This is a very long page. Just keep scrolling the info you're looking for is about 3/4 of the way down the page.

i made my own

i just went to the parts store and bought some pieces. mine is the only 1 ive ever seen done like this. i have done 2 this way. my dads and mine. they work great. i can hit 26 psi of boost and have no problems with it.

parts used:
1. 1/4 x 1/4 x 1/4 "t"
2. 1/4 x 1/8 "t"
3. 1/8 x 1/8 soft elbow "t"
4. 3" section of 1/4 hose i cut out of the map line.
these parts can be bought at any parts store.
the install is very easy. make sure you put the boost line in the right side of the soft elbow fitting how it is in my pic. good luck

Thumbs up

Hey guys. Got my gauges installed last night. Went pretty well, except for a few snags. I have to say that wiring the pod was the most fun. The only problems I encountered: first, it took forever to get the tap started for the pyrometer thermocouple. It was such a tight space and it just didn't want to go! Talk about pucker factor. Second, it seemed like the boost tube was a little short. I t'd into the MAP line very close to the intake, but I must have routed it it to the pod the wrong way. I'd like to get a longer one so it's not shooting straight across my engine compartment.

This is what I saw on my way to work this morning (mixed highway/city, max spd 70mph, 55*)
Max EGT 900*
Max Boost ~8lbs
Max Tran Temp 150* (this reading was reached just as I pulled into the parking lot)
It's nice to know what's going on outside the cab.

Anyway, thanks for everyone's help and tips. I'm very happy with the way they came out and I couldn't have done it without the folks on this forum!
