Questions on Synth DOT 3 brake fluid
99 XLT - planning to flush the brake system before winter
I was in a auto supply store today and saw that Prestone DOT3 now comes in synth (don't know if they still have the 'conventional' Heavy-Duty DOT3). Is synthetic brake fluid good for our expedition considering the rating is correct?
Anyone tried this or any other brand of sysnthetic DOT 3?
Thanks

Motorcraft is actually among the BEST fluids at any price for the street. FOMOCO boosted the spec to make it more boil resistant for some problematic models several years ago. Supposedly it's DOW 1000 fluid IIRC. A premium DOT3 product...DOT3 are more forgiving of water (last longer) than DOT4 I think. DOT4 can have a higher dry boil point.

well here is the thing. you need to use the stock spec brake fluid which is more than you will ever need. but you can not use syntheic fluid in a system with regular dot 3. the 2 fluids will not mix and will become corrosive. and eat the liners of the hose calipers and master cylinder. so to change over you will need to flush the system. and replace the hoses and calipers along with the master cylinder.

All brake fluids are "synthetic" in nature (i.e. build from molecules-up,not extracted directly from crude oils). The DOT spec is the key...most DOT3/4 fluids work in common vehicles. Read the lable and follow OEM specs. The DOT5 etc... material is the "exotic" stuff, is not suitable for most common uses on-road. It has higher boiing points, but with compromises in other areas.
