F150vsTundra: safety

Want F150. Wife wants Tundra since it can come with side airbags and stability control. If you look at highwaysafety.gov you'll see injury crash thieft statistics in the brochures section, I think, F150 injury claim rate is much less than Tundra. I think its a weight issue. What do ya'll think is safer?

So who is gonna drive it? If your wife, is she a decent driver or is the concern about how many wrecks she intends to try to survive? The F-150 is a safe truck. I certainly wouldn't make that the only criteria to base a buying decision on. Has she investigated the problem the Tundra is having with brakes? Has she looked at the rollovers that the Tundra is being blessed with? Considering the price of gas, has she looked at how bad the 4.7 Tundra drinks gas in the real world. Expect 12-14 mpgs- it ain't a light drinker. Might want to take a tour over at tundrasolutions.com. There are a bunch of folks that wished they had something else especially when it is out of warranty and you have to get it fixed. She better know her banker real well- real well. I blame her for all of this because as a man, you would know better than to buy one.

Just for her:

The last one is known manufacturer recogized technical service bulletins.

Thanks for the ammo Flash. I'll drive the truck. Need to only tow about 4000lbs so either truck would do. But, I drive the kids a lot so Mom has a say in what we buy and she makes more money than me.

I can't remember, but didn't the latest incarnation of the F150 recieve like 4 stars in the NHTSA test???
The highest by a pickup if I recall.

On edit: actually it was 5 stars

F150:

Tundra:

The F150 is rated as the safest pickup on the road.

FWIW, did anyone else notice that the F150 not only scored better in the crash tests, but also carries a better EPA mileage rating than the Tundra? Interesting, since it weighs almost 1500 pounds more.

I'm guessing Ms. prospective Tundra owner sees the Yota as less intimidating than the Ford and, in some circles, more acceptable than a full-size domestic truck. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find out what the real objections are, and we'll deal with them.

Don't buy either until the new Tundra and Silverado come out next Summer. That way, you get a look at the latest and greatet and can make a good comparison of all three.

The F-150 did get the highest crash test ratings!

I agree with waiting on the new offerings. I looked at everything before I bought my F150 and both the Tundra and Silverado felt like I was driving a new "old" truck. The Tundra felt and looked much like the 10 year old T-100 I was driving (still felt 3/4 size). The Chevrolet was just like (except for the front end treatment) my friend's 99 GMC.

Go with the F-150. Best bet. I saw spy pics of the '07 GM, and it isn't very bright on the side of looks. The import trucks have alsways had bad styling. The F-150 has great fuel mileage (if you're not romping it everywhere), more so then the Tundra, and it recieves the safest crash test rating EVER by a pickup. Also a darn good looking truck, just wish the belt line was a little lower.
The Tundra is dimensionally smaller. You would have much easier time trying to get kids in and out of a SuperCrew F-150. Tons of room in the backseat. I'm 6'1" tall, at 190 lbs, and I feel right at home back there. I love the drivers seat the most though!

One thing I do notice about those crash tests where F150 scored the highest is that none of the tested side impact... and most other models have side airbags as an option, whereas 150 does not... I have been trying to find out if there is any chance of them becoming an option in 07... I, too, will be carrying my kids in the back now and then... if it comes down to convenience for me with a 150, or full state of the art safety systems in an Expedition with my kids on board... it is an easy decision for me...
