Bank 1 lean check engine code
98 F150 Triton V8 4.6L Stepside
Ok, put in a K&N air filter a few weeks ago and a few days later my check engine light came on. Just got the code checked at Autozone and it said Bank 1 lean P171. I didn't get a P174 that I've seen in these forums.
I've seen a couple of other posts saying that this means the engine is getting too much air?
Would disconnecting the battery for a few minutes reset this? Truck is running fine otherwise.
Thanks!

I got the same code on mine yesterday.
Oddly enough my battery finnaly gave out while I was at Auto Zone.I put a new one on and it must have reset the codes while I had the battery unhooked. But the truck will barley idle now I mean it is rough.
The guy at A.Zone said it meant i wasn't getting enough fuel.
I guess i will have it looked at on Mon.I would like to know a little bit more about it though.

You are getting unmetered air into the combustion chamber causing a lean condition. This could be from a vacuum leak or a dirty/bad MAF sensor.
I would start with cleaning (especially after installing a K+N) the MAF sensor. There is a how to in the articles section, but I'm to lasy to look it up.
Good luck and let us know.

went ahead and took my truck to the shop.I needed to get the plugs changed so I thought i'd let them fix my lean problem as well.I told the mechanic I thought it was the maf.He said it was probably the o2 sensor.Well he said that I had one o2 sensor not working so he changed it and what do you know, the truck is still missing.Said he thought he might have to change all 4 o2 sensors.I asked him to check the maf and it turns out that you all were right that was the problem.I went to A.Zone and orderd one.I'll just put it on myself .Seems like this new mechanic i decided to try is nothing more than a parts changer.
Thanks for all the help.

Can't get to the MAF sensor
Ok, got the how-to on cleaning the maf sensor......seems I'm having problems with the round 1-2" tubing that holds it. Am I supposed to be able to reach and unplug it from there by hand? Do I need to be able to look up there and remove the screws? Or does the tubing pop/come off somehow?
Sorry to be lame....I'm poor and not a mechanic. ;-)

I have not tried to put mine in yet.The part won't be in untill tommorrow.I asked the guy at auto zone and he said it wasn't hard. You just take off 2 bands and unplug it.I guess the 2 bands he's talking about are the hose clamps holdig the intake tube on.I looked and it looks to me like there are 2 bolts holding the sensor on.Maybe some one will give you and me both the low down on how to change this out.
Are you just going to clean yours or replace it?
If you figure it out let me know
Thanx

all you need to do to clean it is remove the air filter then look into the air induction tube going to the throttle body you will see a small sensor with a wire going between to post clean that with air intake cleaner don't toudh it just spray it. then put back together and try it again. simple

Just a little update.I changed out my maf sensor and still the truck was surging at idle.I got to checking around and found a vacum line that was ripped at the connector.I had to buy the pcv assembly. It replaced all the lines coming up.Now the truck is running like new.I guess it pays to check every detail. Before i found this I had the spark plugs changed,an o2 sensor and the maf, plus a I did the front brakes as an aside all to fix a 49 dollar part.
