What MPG do you guys see?
eph,
I had a 1976 Custom with a 3.0 rear end and a 4-barrel holley. I ran 31" tires and got 18 MPG on the highway. I lost the rear end and replaced it with a 3.55. My mileage dropped to about 10 mpg. RPMs are everything when your motor is creating more HP than you need to get down the road.

You guys are driving the wrong kind of vehicles if you are even thinking of checking mpg. . . I find it less painful to just keep filling the tank and turn a blind eye to the odometer.
All kidding aside, those are pretty good numbers. I'm just about finish a tank on my new 400 with Edelbrock and headers . . . I'll post the calculated results in a few days. They say the vacuum opertating secondary four bbl. carb is bette for mpg - we'll see soon.

Believe it or not, when I first rebuilt my 460 (10:1, performer intake, Holley carb, RV cam, roller lifters, stock exhaust, C6 tranny and 4:10 gears), I was getting up to 18 mpg on the highway. Now I average between 8-11. I'm thinking about changing the rear gears to at least 3.55 and maybe lower to get a little better gas mileage. I have always been pretty solid on keeping my C6 but and OD is looking kind of good. I used to not drive the truck a lot but it is now my primary vehicle. I just haven't been real comfortable with an OD tranny due to some of the horror stories I've heard.

I plan to get 20 on the highway. Building the truck now; 76 F100 swb 2wd with a rebuilt 5.0 roller motor, shorty headers with full 2 1/4" dual exhaust, AOD tranny, holley 600 on a '83 GT intake. Actually thinking about an O2 sensor with digital voltmeter and vacuum gauge under dash to GET DOWN with that holley. Haven't decided on gearing yet(9"). Will try the 3.34 in it now, but that's pretty high with the AOD. Will probably end up around 3.70. I for one like an efficient vehicle. Had a '86 F150 4wd 302 that couldn't get out of it's own way and got 10 mpg. Hated that truck.

I've got a new level of respect for 76swb. He makes a good point that if you plan carefully for mpg while putting together an engine combo you do pretty well. The roller engine should be a good contributor to the mpg. I don't drive mine everyday and so my priorities were more for power and torque and whatever mpg happens to result (not that 76swb's engine won't have that too).
I used to get about 11 mpg with the original doggy 351M and stock everything. It was certainly time for an upgrade . . .

I'd like to point something. We are trying to move a significant mass around. That requires energy. The faster we want to do it requires power. In this world we pay for power. My truck gets 11-13 mpg (76 supercab, 390FE, F-150). I just read a review on a gmc denali something, all the reviewer could do is complain about it's gas consumption. 12mpg city, 15 highway. And that's probably the notoriously high EPA rating. So what I'm saying is that old or new if you want to be able to do a certain amount of work in a set period of time then you have to pay the price. Look at you application and be realistic.

ok guys here goes, 76 f250 4x4, 360, 4 speed,4.11 gears,33's. best i can get is around 8 mpg. if you want to here some mileage stories, go check the deisel site. powerstrokes are all over the place. i have seen guys getting as low as 7 mpg, and some are getting 24 mpg. my 97 crewcab 4x4 will get 20 mpg if i keep it under 75 on the highway. somebody made the statement, we drive big trucks that are extremely heavy, so why worry about it. i have had 6 cyl 2x4 trucks that got 6 or 7 mpg, and i have had 460 trucks that got 15 so go figure. it is almost always driving style that regulates fuel mileage in anything.
so drive it like you own it not like you stole it. keep the rpm's down, and pray for cheap fuel prices.
