How to identify old Ford transmissions?

Does anybody have a link to casting #s or other information for old Ford transmissions?

I have three that I'm trying to identify. The first, I believe is the same 3sp that is in my truck now. A stock 3sp unit. The second, is a 3sp OD with a 12v solonoid on the side. I would like to know what this unit came out of originally.

The 3rd, which I have no idea, has a casting mark of "5 1A-100G-A" on the side with a "3100" on the other side. It is almost as long as the OD unit. These buggers are really tough to decode!!

I could post some picts if there are any Transmission Jedis out there. I poked around the tranny forum, but that group doesn't really get into the earlier stuff like this.

Thanks in advance,
-- Jack

Jack, I don't pretend to be a transmission expert, but I'd like to narrow down the possibilities a bit before taking a stab at an ID on your transmissions. Can you get casting numbers for the first two? That would really help. Post all the numbers/letters you can find and make sure to clean up the numbers first so you don't mistake a "G" for a "0", etc.

I couldn't find anything on the third unit given the numbers you posted. Is there anything else on the transmission case? Could it be an overdrive unit and not a transmission?

That is a Ford part number for a transmission built in 1969 (C9). A C9ZP-7006-A is an FMX transmission out of a Mustang - does anyone know what the A-2 suffix is???

Usually you can tell what type they are by looking at the pan (on older ones). The shape and number of bolts usully will give it away. Go look at the pans, then go online to someone who sells the gaskets and it will give you an idea.

Some of the series ones use the same pan though. I know the A4LD/4R44E/5R55E use the same pan. Those are the little ones.

I really don't know shingles about these trannys! I'll clean up that third one tomorrow and get some pictures of the housing & pans as well...

Hmm...I am annoyed. I am not finding a page with just the gaskets on them. I find one here and one over here. If you get pics, I will try to dig through dads old books and try to help.

George (Earl) will probably do it with the numbers first though.

I believe this is the 3sp OD unit. This would be a nice way to go. That OD would be helpful on the highway, breaking the 50mph barrier. I'm going 12v too, so I'd have to rig up a switch or something...

you have mid 50's to mid 60's 3spd and 3spd overdrive, the 3 spd is for a passenger car (long tailshaft) 3spd overdrive could be pass car or truck, can't tell without seeing the input shaft (truck input would be longer and bigger in diameter than the pass 3spd)

You are right. It doesnt work anymore. Too bad because it was a great reference for all kinds of transmissions.
