Gas Gauge Short?

Greetings,

High gas prices? Doesn't matter, mine is always full!!!

When switched to my rear tank, truck runs fine and continues to run, I believe I have about a half tank. The gauge reads over full, as if it's shorted. Is there an easy fix or check that I can do without dropping the tank?

thanks!

You can always run a volt meter to check your wiring & gauges.

But with a 88 model, more then likely it is a bad sending unit in the tank. Those model year of Ford F-Series are notorious for the problem.

So I would say....

Replace the sending units or just calculate you MPG using the odometer & using smarts to figure where your gauge should read.

Check your selector switch. Make sure that it is switching the gauge sending side. Mine went out...the pump side but the gauge side worked. Just pull the switch and jumper both sides. Make sure that it ohms out (zero ohms) the same on both sides.

Thanks for the great replies.

jbalestri,
I'll try the switch test, certainly easier than dropping the tank.

That is just a recommendation based on what I had to do. I thought I had a faulty pump...when through everything...except replacing the pump. Only to find out my switch had gotten hot and melted. The gauge worked, but the pump didn't, either tank. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the problem. Now I always start at the switch.
