The cap on my 2000 Expy says 5-30, or maybe it is the sticker on the front by the fan. When did they change it to 5-20?

in 2001. you can use 5w20 in your engine. they approved most cars back to the early 90's for 5w20 even the 460.

Geez, sometimes you guys just dont see the obvious! The redline 10w30 gets to all them big parts that need the old time oiling, the synergyn 5w30 gets to all the high tech stuff plus gives you great gas mileage 1-6th of your driving (and thats the 1-6th part of when your truck really would've sucked gas, and the delvac 5w40 keeps the seals from leaking! Also the delvac gives it that bit of diesel rumble, but lets not open that can of oil---er I mean worms!

Also, you may buy 3 cases of oil but they last longer then just using one case same brand!

I am curious as to how the gas buying goes and hope the 6 different stations are fairly close!

I switched ti mobil 1 5W30 in my 2003 SD. I used the motorcraft 5W20 the 1st 2 times I chanded the oil and it was a nasty black, and stinky. By the way, my truck only has 11000 miles on it now, and has only towed once. I usually average 5500-6000 miles a year on any of my vehciles, and so far, my SD which I bought new, is the only one that has nasty black oil at 3000 mile change.

I second 92F150I6 on the nasty black oil. I used motorcraft 5-20 for the first 15,000 miles and it always lost a quart every 1000 miles and the oil looked like crap when I drained it. Had rattles in motor upon startup as well.
Went to Mobil 1 and the oil looked a little better when drained. This past year I went to 5-40 rotella synthetic and my truck no longer uses oil and the oil looks clean when i change it. BTW I change my oil no later than 2000 miles and I have put the truck thru its paces without any engine failure to date at 53,000 miles. As far as tolerences being tighter in these motors I posted a while back that the 5.4 has been in production since 96-97? and back then they used 5-30 with no problems. What changed inside these motors that they now have to use 5-20?

Ain't that 5.4 the most incredible engine!

Spitting plugs, and SO weak compared to competition and all.

When is Ford going to wake up??

Ford riding poor performance and reliability on the 5.4 for years!!!

What's new Ford?

Owners here are worried about oil, filters and reliability...???

yes it is one of the best there is. none of the issues you stated are wide spread. most mod enignes live 300k in heavy fleet use so they are not to bad.
