Bumper Bolts

I have searched in earnest, both on this forum and google, to find bumper bolts authentic to the 50's-60's where there was chromed "cap" over the head of the bolt... do you know what I mean.

Anybody have a source to recommend?

Thanks in advance... Brian

I've seen chrome and polished stainless bolts, but not the caps you mention. Most of the usual vendors carry the polished and chrome bolts.

Not sure I understand. Can you do a sketch and post it? A photo would be even better!

George,
Picture a regular carriage bolt with a thin chromed cap that is crimped over the head of the carriage bolt.
I don't know of a source for them, heck, I haven't even thought about that style of bolt in ages. I used to have a handful of them in the bolt box years ago.
I'd just replace them with a new style bumper bolt and be done with it

Bobby

Guess I'm having a hard time seeing what a cap would hang on to. The head on a carriage bolt is like a truss-head machine screw without any sort of wrench or screwdriver slot or hole. The only way to have something over the head seems like it would have to wrap around the head and go between the underside of the head and whatever the bolt was holding in place. Am I close???

Hey Bobby, I put those on my Fairlane. I got them from JC Whitney. They may still sell them. Good luck, Jag

George,

Exactly! Sorta like a bottle cap. I think in the old days it must have been cheaper to do it that way than to have a polished bolt...who knows

Jag, thanks...I hope Phityfive is paying attention.

Are they like an acorn nut? You can get these caps for flathead V-8 engines. If the bolts are the same head you could use them.

Yep Ryan is right on. I'm sure that they are cheaper to buy/manuafacture, but the reason I like them is that the business end is steel instead of SS. I had a SS bolt gall once on a bumper and it was a bear to get off! Jag
