You can usually pick one up at your local parts store, and it comes with a manual that contains code definitions.

Are you sure? I've seen a lot of readers that cover OBD-II, but very few that will read EEC-IV codes. And typically, they are much more expensive. For example:

You can find a ford specific code reader (up to 1995, if I remember correctly) for around 30.00 in your local walmart´s automotive section. They also sell an OBDII code reader/scanner for around a 100.00

I use my check engine light and a paperclip as my code reader. If you aren't aware (you might just want a reader, which is ok too if you have the money), here are instructions on how to pull the codes for free: http://www.thorssell.net/hbook/eectest.html

Autoazone has them too, when they're on sale they're only about $25, but a paperclip is cheap and so am I.

I paid 30 bucks at Pep Boys about 10 years ago for my Actron CP-9015
EEC-4 scanner. Great book comes with it which explains how to use it, and lots of good info on how the EEC-4 system works.

And it list all the codes.

I use a jumper wire and I'm lucky that the check engine light flashes the code for me. But some EEC IV vehicles don't output to the CEL. My 91 Probe for example, needs a voltmeter for the test.

I haven't seen a OBD 1 code reader in the stores lately either.

That unit works with OBD 1 and 2 vehicles. If you're after something like that then your money would be better spent on something like EASE diagnostics. It looks like it will monitor everything the auto xray will plus it will datalog and perform a cylinder balance test as well...and it's cheaper, but you you'll need a laptop though. The EASE is obviously not for everyone, but I have found it to be VERY useful being that I do my own tuning on both of my trucks, and my brothers truck as well.

Oh and yes, I picked up an OBD1 scanner at Auto Zone for roughly 25 bucks.

Will it do a cylinder balance test on a non-sequential EFI computer? Sequential injected cars can do a cylinder balance test with the paperclip method.

Yes it will, and it will display the results on your laptop screen.

If all you want to do is pull codes then the EASE is a waste of money. As compared to the Auto Xray, the EASE will do the same (for EEC-4) for roughly $130 less.
