Need a Engine Replacement

I am in need of a engine replacement for my 97, 4.2L 4x4 104,000mi.

Whats my best way to go on this?? Find a salvage?, buy a rebuilt?, Buy a new one? Upgrade to a V8? What are the issues with swapping for a V8??

I just do not want to get ripped off in this deal. Thanks for the advice!

Hey there,
I have a 98 4.2L V6 F150 with a blown motor as well. Guess I'm in the same boat as you, have you found out anything helpful? My name is dave btw, and I live in Cincinnati Ohio. Thanx

I suggest checkin gwith a local, reputable independant garage - hopefully one you know and trust.
I believe you/they can order a new crate motor for a fairly reasonable price and have them install it.

From all I have read and heard, swapping to a V8 is out of the question. If you happen to have the 5 speed manual transmission, the 5.4 will not bolt up to it. I'm not sure about the 4.6, but I don't think it will bolt up either.

I did a quick Google search and found several sources for reman'ed 4.2 engines - ranging from $1,900 - $2,200. Not sure of all the details of what is included, but that seem like a reasonable price for a fully reman'ed engine.

Best of luck to both of you.
