Starting today, GM offers employee discount to everyone

Too bad they don't have anything that I'd want...

Short-term, Ford will have to respond by keeping their rebates high. But I can't help but wonder how this will play out for GM in the long run. Seems pretty desperate to me.

The hugh discounts and rebates will help clear out the current stock but each good deal eliminates a customer for the new model coming out. Then they have to heavily discount them and it goes on and on.

The $5,000 rebate I got on my truck from dealer invoice means it will be a long time before I will be in the market for a replacement.

It's a problem caused by the way the FTE website handles links... I guess you'll have to cut-and-paste the link as you see it into your browser address window.

It's like I read in a marketing book one time:

"If something goes on sale, it was overpriced to begin with."

Heck, I'm a GM employee and I wouldn't buy one.

GM is losing money like mad... Ford is operating at a (reduced) profit. Big difference.

It's...ummm...extraordinary. A couple of points:
1. Dealership participation is voluntary
2. I see a licence to steal trades right here.
3. If you played it right, and were vaguely interested in a GM product, it could be a heckuva deal. About $1500 below invoice on a Duramax Crew less a $3000 rebate, less FTE discount . Wowsa.

This is true. Why else would GM sell off the EMD (makers of locomotive and other big diesel engines)?

How much is the employee discount worth (in percentage terms) in the US, I know in Australia it varies btwn. 10-25%
Quite a saving.

savings from GMS offer

I just pulled a Tahoe LT 4X4 Invoice arbitrarily. This is a Loaded Moonroof/DVD/Navigation/XM Radio/CD changer kind of truck. MSRP is $50690, GMS is $42861 less $3000 rebate. Invoice was $45029.

Then I pulled a HD2500 4X4 Crew Cab Duramax. This one is a LT package with everything on it but a Moonroof (Heated Leather, memory, Power everything) MSRP $47851, GMS is $40550.75 less $3000 rebate. Invoice was $42592.20.

That ain't shabby.

That isn't bad at all, I personally believe that "buying" market share is a bad business practice, but there could be other reasons behind it.

You sure would be more than a little bit frustrated if you purchased a Chevy on the 31st of May...

Yes...and no. If you were in the market for a 'Burb or a Tahoe, the rebates were $2000 higher last month. Even with GMS, you were better off then. If you were in the market for a Duramax truck, you are much better off now. Some of us kind of knew this in advance, though, and advised clients accordingly. This was one of the few times GM released advance info for next months rebates.
