4.6l romeo/windsor differences?

Just wondering the differences between a windsor 4.6 and a romeo 4.6. I know the VIN number 6 is windsor and W is Romeo but what is the actual differences, just the assembly plants?
Just curious

The differences run a little deeper than that. Here are a few:

REP (Romeo Engine Plant) motors have 11 bolts on the left valve cover, WEP (Windsor Engine Plant) motors have 13.

Camshafts sprockets are retained differently between the two and the TDC camshaft alignments are different.

Water pump hose under the intake manifold is retained differently, REP is clamp, WEP is metal tube and nut.

REP Crankshaft main caps have 2 main cap bolts, 2 jack screws, 2 side bolts. WEP crank main caps have bolts, dowel pins, but no jackscrews.

Number of thrust washers on the last crank journal are different.

Crank main cap torque specs are different.

There may be other differences, these are just a few that I know of.

Weird, huh???? Ford makes an engine line and calls it a modular for the ease of interchangeability and then makes two different versions.

The flywheel to crankshaft bolt #'s are different also....(5 vs. 6 ?)

I am working on a swap out and came across alot of info. flywheel/flexplate is 6 or 8 on the windsor, Most comman to be the 8. romeo used 11 differnt heads. so on so forth. check this link for more details on it. it changed my mind on what I was going to do with my 98.

Rebuilding the Ford 4.6L SOHC Engine, Doug Anderson, Engine Builder, April 2002

that lists a ton of changes on the 2.
and thats Ford for you. nvr what you have grown to love about them and nvr the same twice. makes life fun as a gear head.
