Cool ZF S547/542 5 Speed Transmission

I am hoping to get some help with a problem I am having. I have a 2000 F350 SD SC V10 4x4 5 speed manual transmission. The "extension housing" broke. So, in an attempt to replace it, I pulled both drive shafts, transfer case, and started working on separating the housing from the tranny. It will not come out. I have hammered on it, pulled on it, pretty much everything I can think of to get it out and it will not come apart further than 2 inches. I called the local dealership here, they said there should be nothing holding it back, pull harder. It seems to be stuck on the 4 shift rods that extend into it. I checked with them to make sure it did not have to be in neutral. They said it does not. It is in 1st gear right now, stuck in 1st. Does anyone know of anything internal to that case that I am not seeing? Has anyone else had this problem? I have removed all the bolts from the housing, there is nothing visible holding the housing on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The extension housing doesn't really come off on these.
You have to remove the tranmsission and stand it on it's back end and lift the front case off the extension housing.
I think if you search in here you'll find more info on doing that.

Thanks for the reply, I am still searching around looking for answers. The only thing that does not make any sense is having to pull the tranny to get this housing off. It bolts between the transfer case and the tranny. When you say "stand it on it's back end" what do you mean?

Just a bit of FYI for anyone that is reading this, I think I found the problem. Could be two things. The bearing on the shaft could be cantered, gonna pull the seal and look at that. The housing does not go in or out now. Also, I talked to a mechanic who looked up the entire assembly/disassembly of the tranny. Told me that the first step (I overlooked) was to loosen the bolt (allen key head) on the side of the extension and take the one from the tranny case completely out. This will allow the gear to travel and come out with the housing, as I understand it. Going to try this, before dropping the entire transmission. Will let you know if any progress is made.
