Hydraulic lifters in a Y?
#31
Charlie, I'm not doubting you for a second that there may have been some experimental Y-Blocks for the military, but I can't see the feasibility of them being cost efficient because of the design of the block itself. The FE's had a central oil gallery which lends itself to hydraulics (Except the 427" side oiler, which to my knowledge, never had hydraulics). The Y-Block is also a side oiler. See what I'm saying.
By the way, don't you owe me a beer down in Hermosa Beach, Ca. Bring Bill with ya. haha

The 427 FEs had hydraulic lifters in the production '68 cars that produced 390 hp. All of the "service" blocks sold after '67 were drilled for hydraulics and usable without modification for solids. The '68 engine was a side oiler.
All of the Y blocks from the 239 through the 312s were solids and if properly adjusted, very near as silent as a hydraulic lifter engine. I changed cams in several 292s and 312s using the wooden clothes pin trick.
And I'll take a Dos Equis dark

The Lincoln engines of the '50s are considered by many to be a "Y" block and they had hydraulics. The FE engines are little more than a FAT "Y" block as anyone who has compared them can tell you. The biggest difference is the huge intake and skinny heads as well as the distributor being at the front on the FE that makes it an odd ball.

I grew up with the flatties and the 2 things that kept me away from them was the ignition system and the valve adjustment hassles.

And don't forget the exhibition car that Bill Stroppe took to all the NASCAR races in '56. They called it Thumper and it was very impressive with a 390 (?) cid engine in that orange and white hardtop. That was the forerunner of the Turnpike Cruisers.

It was so impressive I started one of my first unfinished projects because of it. I picked up a warranteed Lincoln engine and proceded to attemp a swap into my '54 Customline 2 door. I sent the engine to a shop to be bored .125 over and while the engine was apart and I had the car apart the shop burnt to the ground. I didn't have the will to start over so I bought a Fuel Injected, 4 speed '57 Vette. That was a fun car but every time it rained I got wet. But that's a story in itself.

My '54 was a lot of fun once I had a trans and rear axle that could take the beating that that 292 and I gave it. I went through 26 trannies and 2 rears in one year and I don't know how many jobs. Aahh to be young again!
