Can I change tranny shift points?

I have a 1993 F-150/4x4 with a 302 auto trans. I don't like the 2nd-third shift. Can you move the shift point higher up in the RPM range?
Also the down shift from third to 2nd. It stays in third at 20 MPH until you really get on it.

As far as I now a custom chip is the only way you can modify shift points on electronically controlled transmissions. I'm going to be getting a custom chip in about a month because my truck shifts way to early at low to medium throttle situations and I'm afraid it will cause trans damage.

Shifts

Do traditional shift kits work in these transmissions? I have a '96 and I also don't like how quickly I get to 3rd gear.

I have a '94 F250 with a Superchip/transmission shift kit and the shift points are tuneable. I had a '96 Bronco with the same. I have pulled horsetrailers with both although the F250 is primarialy used for our gooseneck, kinda hard on the old Bronco. Programmers allow modification to a point and the chips/shift kits go the rest of the way.

On my truck with a shift kit it only speeds up the actual time it takes for the actual shift and not the shift point. A chip or a tuner is needed to change the speed and rpm the shifts occur at.

Ok,
to clarify, when I pull away from a stoplite and step on the gas normally the truck is in 3rd by the time you reach 20 MPH and then the engine chugs and bucks. If you step on the gas hard enough to to reach say,35MPH everything is fine. Or if you are rolling up to a light that is green and making a turn it doesn't down shift to 2nd and the same thing happens.......

Mine does the same thing, that's why I'm getting a custom chip to get it straightened out but I'm I'm also running a different ring and pinion and larger than stock tires so this is why my shifting is off.

Larger tires probably cotribute some,I'm running 31-10.50 15's but it acted this way before I put bigger tires on.
So what about these programmers I've heard about. Are they exspensive? And how do they work? tex94F250 mentioned tuneable shift points????

I have owned many other vehicles in the past with stick shifts and I am just tired of shifting!

My 93 pretty much shifts the same way but not too bad. I just don't like the fact that it doesn't downshift until its almost floored. I changed from the stock 235's up to 31s. I reset the PSOM and I think I liked it better before I changed it.

Does my "93" even have an electrically controlled trans that can be altered with something like SuperChips?.................

You '93 should have an E4od and if so that's what I have. A chip and shift kit with the use of a tuner will allow you to programvaired shift/rpm points. It will not do much for a tranny that's quite worn. If you have an engine transmission combo in good shape, it's great. Remeber though, I have to burn 93 octane gas with it.

In some cases, you don't need to install a shift kit or valve body. A tuner can increase the TV pressure to firm up the shifts as well as modify the shift-lock schedule to raise or lower the shift points. The E4OD is a very tunable transmission.
