Smile Good auto trans for a 300/6

Hi Iam new to the board. I have an 85 Bronco with carbureted six , 4 speed manual tranny. Is there any good auto tranny for that year and engine that I could look for at the salvage yards. Will they work off an 8 cyl ? Are they any good or worth the work.I understand that I will need a new radiator, lines ,linkage and flywheel Thanks, Mike

C-4 or C-6 have both come attached to the 300 I-6 from the factory & as long as you have the Proper Torque coverter for an I-6, a C-4 or C-6 off a 289, 302 & 351W will do just fine, they use the same Bell Housing as the 300 I-6.

The AOD and E4OD also came hooked to these at various times if you want an overdrive. The c4/c6 seem to last longer in my experience.

Although the E40d would be a harder swap due to the electronics.

Don't forget you will also need a shifter of some sort in addition to what you list.

And if you use an aftermarket transmission cooler, you can keep your stock radiator.

The C4 and C6 do not have an overdrive. The C6 is probably Ford's strongest trannsmission. It doesn't have that deep of a first gear, about 2.46 stock. If your looking for a long lasting, tough tranny, then go with the C6.

Depends on your driving conditions, knowledge, pocket, time, etc....

In my oppinion you shuld get a C6 or AOD if you like chalenges then try and E4OD...

The problem w/ the AOD & E4OD is the way that the TV Cable is attached, as the bracket has a tendancy to break & then you Burn Your Tranny Up before you even Know you've a Problem.

Hmmm, thats interesting. When I changed my 3-speed over to a C-6, I just used the torque converter that came with it, and it works fine.

The 300 I-6 uses that small block bolt pattern, so any trans with that pattern should theoretically work.

You lucked out then, because they are rather different due to the Fact that the Stall Speeds are quite a Bit lower for the I-6 which are in the Teens.
There are others things as well that I just can't remember as present.
I just went through this w/ My Tranny Specialist & we had to do a Bit of research to make sure we got Everything correct for my 300 I-6 & C-4 because I basically Started from Scratch on Building them From the Ground Up.

You can ususally tell by the shape of the pan and number of bolts. There are lots of sources online (just google it). But if it is a 3 spped it will probably be either a c4 or c6

yeah its a C6, i checked out oil pans for C4s and C6's, and mine looks just like a C6, plus the C4 pans are completely square.

I remember reading about an aftermarket controler for the E4OD that allows you to lockout the O-drive and converter lockup. This would be a super setup behind that 300. The E4OD is as tough as the C6 I had one behind a monster 460 with 375 horses at the wheels it never failed.

Yes I'm using a 300 carby + E4OD + T-case BW1356 electronic shift on my F150 1986 4X4...

I'm using a TCS controller from Bauman Engineering, loock at www.becontrols.com

If you want some more "brain" look at www.compushift.com

Using Original Bracket and Cable is trouble free setup. E4OD doesn't use TV cable, it is a computer controlled tranny so it use TPS sensor, VSS sensor and MLPS sensor.
