I have the Gibson cat-back SS exhaust. It is only slightly louder than stock, but the sound is also deeper, more of a growl. I really like it because I too wanted to be able to hear my radio with the windows down. Gibson did a good job of making an exhaust that is fairly loud at the tailpipe, but not in the cab. Gave a noticeable power gain too, nothing huge, but noticeable. It was also extramely easy to install. Less than an hour, with the most time being spent getting the old one off.

I agree, I'm happy with the Gibson cat-back...

When my pockets are a little bit more healthy I like to put on magnaflow duals. I heard the magnaflows on the Dakota and a S-10 V6 and it sounded nice so I can imagine my 4.0 will sound good on them to.

Does anyone have any pics of either exhaust installed on their truck that they could be so kind to post?

Thanks!

Here's a lin to a pic with the Gibson SS exhaust already installed on my '99 XLT. Sorry, I didn't take any pics of the entire exhaust.

You also want that good sound to be outside and not in the cab. The Magnaflow and the Gibson put less sound into the cab than the Flowmaster 40 series. I had the Magnaflow on mine installed further toward the rear of the truck to put the good sound outside the truck and let me enjoy the sound system.
