2004 5.4 Triton V-8
Is it me or is this the noisest 5.4 ever made? I have taken to 2 different dealers and they say it is normal. When at idle and warm it sounds like a rod knocking or something. My 2000 5.4 was a really quiet running engine and this sound is very annoying. Is this normal? I only hear it when engine is warm. Are there any other people with this problem? They say it is not the cam phase sensor. Are there any tsb's on this? Other than this it is the nicest truck I have ever owned!!PLEASE HELP!!

Here's a test for you'll. Start engine, let idle till warmed up and walk around right side of truck all the way back to rear cab section, if the sound I am hearing is normal than I don't have a problem...Never hear this sound on cold start-up. I Crank truck up for at least 15 min. prior to driving. I also run FORD recommened oil and oil filters. Truck has 5200 miles and is a 2004 X-CAB FX4 4X4 .Sound is really loud in a 2 car garage.P.S. Don't go all the way back to exhaust pipe, stay around where bed and cab meet and then walk forward and backwards. ANY TSB"S OUT THERE ON ENGINE RELATED PROBLEMS?

i have a 2004 f150 with the 5.4 noticed i too had a knock when warmed up on the pass side and you heard it in the cab to. only had 250 miles brought the dealer they told me its normal.i could not except that so i brought it to another dealer ( they only work on ford trucks ) they told me its not normal and to bring it in. they changed the cam phaser ( so kind of replacement kit ) got it back the other day no noise. runs and sounds great. the tsb is for ticking but it also aplies to other stuff. you have to bring your truck to a dealer that has experince with trucks.

I have the noise also. My dealer said it is a "characteristic" noise of the new 5.4. I don't think so. My truck does not always knock when it is warm, so I don't know how it could be a "characteristic". This dealer also said that the noise does not adversely affect engine performance. I have bought 4 new F-150's from this particular dealership in the past 9 years, and have had a good relationship with them, but I think I need another opinion.
Obviously everyone does not have this noise. So it is not an inherent "characteristic", especially if there is a TSB involving the noise. Ford would not make an engine that sounded like that on purpose. It seems as though some(owners) have had success replacing the cam sensor, and some have not.
I am curious. Of those who have the knock, how is your mileage? Mine is poor (13 mpg, 60% highway). Maybe I should start a new thread asking this. Just trying to get some insight.
