Smile Factory fiberglass running boards,92 Flareside

I have a 92 F150 Flareside with the factory fiberglass running boards. The mounting hardware for the running boards is in poor condition and I'd like to replace it. There is a metal tube that runs underneath the boards and holds them in place. On my pickup these tubes are rusty, and I'd like to replace them ASAP. Does anybody know where I can get replacements for this mounting hardware?

This is an old post to reply to but while we're at it, does anybody know where in the heck I can get a set of the factory running boards for the 92-96 Reg. cab pickups? Any color will do!

I would try the bone yard. Take a look at :www.car-parts.com. That site will list many salvage yards in your area.

I assume that you are referring to factory running boards and not the aftermarket style .

I got my factory set from ebay for $100. They were from Wisconsin and I am having a from copy the mounting hardware in stainless so it wont rust anymore and last longer. I would suggest taking the hardware to a metal shop and see what they can do to fab a replacement set in stronger steel or stainless since it is just tubing mostly.

Lund made em for Ford, and sold them as an aftermarket add on too.

I had a set of Lund next to my factory ones and they looked different and more square than the smooth Ford models.

Oh really? I know that Lund OEM'd em for Ford, I am surprised they molded their aftermarket ones differently.

they just seemed more square and not as fluid fitting as the factory ones I got. Of course I may have seen a different model from Lund, not sure though it was a while ago.

I have a 1992 Flareside w/a 5.8l(351) one of the most dependable trucks I have ever own. It has 150,000 miles and always starts. The problem I have now is the factory running boards support on the passenger side is rusting away. 2 years ago I replaced the driver side,it cost under $200.00,now they want over $400.00 . What a rip. I will probable replace it with a aftermarket running board, and I am sure it won't look as nice as OEM. Just venting.

Why not take the support to a metal shop that can do tubing and have them make you a set out of thicker and higher quality steel tubing? I am going to have a friend of mine duplicate the supports in stainless tubing for mine.

Is that $400 for the running board and mounting support, or $400 for just the mounting support? I need to replace the support on the passenger side of my 92 Flareside, too. If it's going to cost 400 for the OEM part, I guess I better start saving right now! I'm going to wait until spring anyways, because right now the truck is parked for the winter.

I havent been able to get ahold of him directly because of the holidays, but I should know something with in the next couple of weeks. He will probably try to do most of the work on his spare time to keep costs down. Keep in touch and I'll let you know if its a go and how much if he can produce more than one set.

GOOD LORD!!! I know what part I'm going to start making and selling on e-bay! Steel supports for these running boards is TOO EASY to make! Basically, anything would have been stronger than the factory junk. I'll make a set for mine (when and if I can locate a set) and will let you guys see some pics if you're ever interested later. The one thing I'll guarantee is they won't cost more than $20 a set!
