Technical Service Bulletin 99816 - Motor Oil
Does anyone know anything about TSB 99816? It states that Ford recommends SAE 5W-30 motor oil for servicing any Ford gasoline powered engine vehicle regardless of vehicle year. I just bought a '94 Ranger 4x4 and although I'm not to the point that I need to change the oil yet when I do I want to make sure I'm using the right weight. Any ideas what is behind this Bulletin?

this is just one of those TSBs that happens to be of use to techs. 5W-30 oil is a smoother flowing oil when cold than any higher #'s. (the W # refers to how it operates when cold) otherwise when it's at operating temperature it behaves like any other 30 weight oil. basically, 5W-30 oil will give you the basic protection you need. if it's an older vehicle or is run very hard, you might want to try a heavier oil, to prevent leaks and/or overheating from excess heat.
hope this helps and sorry it's so long,
