Are K&N air filters any good?

Some like them, some don't. Personally, I would not put one on my engine. The Donaldson paper filter I have (Tymar intake) filters at about 99.8% when clean and 99.9% when slightly dirty. The K&N filters at about 97% when clean and 99% when slightly dirty (numbers from their own website and other testing I've seen). That doesn't seem like much, but when clean the K&N is allowing 15 times more dust to pass, and when slightly dirty 10 times more. Not only that, there are several other intakes that offer [I]at least[/] the same airflow as the K&N. The most popular on FTE seem to be the Tymar and the Ford AIS, both of which flow a lot of air and also filter well.

My replacement K&N went to the landfill last maintenance interval. I saw no improvements, went back to throw-aways (NAPA Gold). If I ever did find and use a good re-usable/cleanable type of filter again, I would buy a spare so that I could just pop the prepared one in and not have to wait for it to dry etc. Just my opinion.
